Clap On, Clap Off

Clap on (clap, clap), clap off (clap, clap), clap on, clap off – the Clapotis!

The Clap is off…off the needles, that is.

clap1.JPG The specs:
Clapotis, a free pattern from knitty.com
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden, colorway 243, 8 skeins
Size: about 70 inches long – 15 inches longer than the pattern (I figure that a shawl’s length should match one’s wingspan)
Recipient: my ever-chilly sister in Alaska
clap2.JPG Yes, this was my NINTH Clapotis.

Shouldn’t Kate Gilbert (the designer) give me some kind of award or something?

For devotion?

yarn.JPG Next on…this yarn. Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino.
eastenders.JPG I call this the EastEnders baby sweater. I saw a character on the show wearing something like it, so I thought I’d copy it for my sister’s baby.

The main color looks black here, but it is actually chocolate brown. I like the way the brown looks with the pastels.

Because cashmere makes so much sense for a baby, right? (ha)

ike.JPG I snapped this photo right after Chris called Ike “Junkyard Dog”.

There are a million soft places for him to relax, and he chose slate.

I don’t really understand him, but it isn’t like he’s laying on a pile of automotive parts or something.

  1. Wow! Your Clapotis looks amazing!!! So do you wash it and then block it by pinning it out into a rectangle? I still haven’t blocked mine and would love to know what you did! It is seriously stunning! That baby sweater is looking awesome too.

PS Your site looks really great! Congrats!

  2. Hi Grace – Thanks! I always block my Clapotis(s) out into a rectangle, but it doesn’t really require pins. Just a good soak in Eucalan, then a little smoothing. I like the square, flat look of a blocked Clap. After a few months it will start to creep back into it’s unblocked state, but then it’s usually time to wash it again, anyway.

Thanks for the kind words on the new site! Ya know, while putting together today’s post, I felt like a guest poster. Really. It will take a while for me to get used to the new digs.

  3. wow! i love the clap. it looks freaking gorgeous. i really really want to knit myself one of these.

also, loving the baby sweater and of course, the dogs!

  4. how long did it take you to knit this Clapotis? Seems like you said you started it a couple days ago.

BTW: I don’t use firefox (I resist change to much it seems) and your entries do the horizontal thing instead of the vertical thing on explorer.

  5. Monique – thanks for bringing up the IE problem! I went back to my code and found a teenytiny problem. Firefox didn’t mind, but IE had a problem with it. Should be okay now!

  6. Hey there, been lurking and couldn’t resist. You gave me h keyto unlock the door and eav wide open!!!!

Most peopl don’t announce it when they have the clap. hehehe

All joking aside,it is beutiful n thephoto showcases it mch betterthe patterns picture

  7. We call our basenji “dirt dog” because she loves to sit in piles of dirt! Right now she is battling a little skin irritation. She is probably sunburned! Beautiful clapotis, by the way!

  8. All of Alaska is going to be asking where your newest neice got her wardrobe. All the pieces are so pretty, and…can babies be classy? If so, she will the classiest baby ever.

I do like the new site. It’s not as pink as I had expected, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. 🙂

And I enjoyed the necklace on the model. If I didn’t recognize anything else about Very Pink, that would reassure me I was in the right place. 🙂

  9. Wow. The new site design is really great! (Can’t knit, but web design. That’s something I could talk about ’til the cows come home. And they tend not to in LA. lol)

  10. Hi Staci,
    Love the new site!

Repeating what HDW said above — I love your clapotis (would clapoti be the plural?). Your pictures actually show what the item looks like. I checked out Knitty’s pics and couldn’t figure out why everyone liked the thing. It just looked like a stretchy scarf to me. But now, I get it and I actually think it’s quite lovely. I don’t know if I’m up for the challenge, but I may have a go at it.

  11. Staci – the new site rocks! Great new look – I love the funky retro feel. Also – the clapotis looks amazing and nine of em? I think that’s got to be a record of some kind. Now tell me…how do you knit so fast?!

  12. I love the new site too ! Ike must like the feel of the slate, whether it is cool or warm… My B’s seem to alternate between the two, very strategically…

  13. Staci, I can’t believe you watched Eastenders! Do you still watch the soap? I am in the UK and started watching because my husband (weird, huh), watched it every day.
By the way, not sure how I managed to get to this older part of your blog, but I am glad I did. I am yet to give a clapotis a try, really should go for it soon.

  14. Hi Staci,

I’m a little late (!) to the Clapotis party but I was wondering if you were ever going to do a tutorial for it at some time?
