Badass Girlie Baby Sweater

Phew.

The purple-bobbin-madness (a.k.a “Insanity”) is finally finished. Okay…I say “finally” as if it’s been going on forever, it hasn’t. It just took me a lot longer than I expected.

purple1.JPG And it’s a baby sweater!

Details:
Pattern: my own design
Intarsia motif: Arrrgyle by Julia Farwell-Clay and Kate Gilbert
Yarn: Dale of Norway Baby Ull
Size: 12 -18 months
Recipient: My niece, who still insists on not being born yet

img_6450.JPG Can you see now why I kept it a secret? To show this knitting in-progress would have made the final product pretty boring.
img_6445.JPG And, the inside. (For all of you non-knitters – this side is fairly important to us.)

Not my best finishing work, but damn…I had a lot of ends to weave in.

img_6435.JPG I had this many ends to weave in.

Dirty little secret #1:
I tie knots when I do colorwork. If tying knots is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

img_6441.JPG Dirty little secret #2:
See the white, outlined diamonds? This is how they look now that I’m finished…
img_6428.JPG …But this is how they looked before I duplicate stitched (embroidered) over the existing stitches. I suppose it was the weight of the bobbins that made these stitches almost disappear.

Next time I do argyle, I’ll probably just duplicate stitch the outline stitches, and save myself the trouble of four more bobbins hanging from the work.

img_6433.JPG I’ve been wanting to do something with the Arrrglye motif for a while now, and it was the reason I designed this sweater.

The sweater has lots of tiny stitches to clearly show a detailed color pattern, and simple dropped shoulders to keep there from being much shaping. Tiny stitches + dropped shoulders = plenty of room for a big motif.

I’ll be looking for other cool intarsia designs to use on this simple sweater pattern.

  1. Well isn’t that just the cutest little girlie badass sweater! Haha! It looks great. I have a long way to go to get my inside looking that good. I still cringe whenever another knitter gets their hands on my work, because I’m not a very good finisher. I must take a class soon – there’s no excuse!

  2. she’s this close to being ready for roller derby. send her my way for the winter one year. lil doll and i will get her all ready. 🙂 she can skate for the reservoir dolls here in madison!!!

btw, my first comment about this (outloud mind you!) was, “damn, that’s a bomb-ass sweater!!!”

    so true!

  3. That sweater is way cool! I’ve been out of town for a few days and am catching up now. Good luck on your move! Good for you! I feel for your sis–I was 12 days late with my first and was induced after a week overdue with my 2nd. IT IS NOT FUN!

  4. Omg! That is the cutest thing ever! I swear, I’d wear it and I don’t do argyle (too much in the 80s I guess). Seriously, you should do an adult version of that because it’s just too cute for words!

  5. That is the best baby sweater ever!! It was definitely worth the wait to see this beautiful creation. Your niece is going to be rocking it up in AK 🙂

  6. Gorgeous! That was well worth the wait! That’s one lucky kid. And that was a lot of ends to weave in, I bet that took almost as long as some of the knitting! Thankfully Lou had the time in his busy schedule to supervise

  7. Staci! You so rock. What a kickass, badass, bitchin’ little sweater. You’re little niece is going to be the hippest tot in Alaska.

Argyle is and always has been one of my favorite looks. I’m glad you made us wait, it was so worth it.

  8. I love it! That is fantastic. Seriously, I want one in my size.
And your finishing looks pretty darn tidy to me.

  9. Staci~
That sweater is so YOU! It totally rocks. I think it will probably fit your niece when she finally decides to make her grand debut. If she continues on the track she’s currently on, the sweater will be too small. Perhaps you should send Molly the sweater now so that she has a good reason to come out and get with the program.

As usual, your ability to create a pattern and follow it amazes me. The inside of the sweater looks fabulous. I know it would be a train wreck if I tried something like that.

The only thing that would have made your post completely official is if you let one of the boys model the sweater!

  10. You’re not the only one who ties knots in colorwork..
As long as it’s working well for you, who cares? That’s become my ‘philosophy’ on fair isle.

    What a great little sweater.

  11. I just got an email from the Dale of Norway Rep to sneak in an order – she says it takes 4 hours (!!!!) to go over her entire line. Since I’ve never knit with anything from the brand, Wanna give me a hint about what I should order? Or pick a few of our favorite lines they carry and let me know. notice the new email – I am no longer at work.

  12. ARRRRGH! I love it! It was quite the hit at the store on Saturday — much talked about. 🙂 I wish I could have seen it (and you!) in person.

Is Mollie here yet? Doesn’t she know she has knits to wear?!!

  13. LOVE LOVE LOVE the sweater, get your sis to look at the pic and Molly may just decide to come out so she can wear it. 🙂
I am wondering how much S&H would cost to send you some materials (wool or such) so you could make me one like this for a boy. Of course only if you had the interest. Let me know, and I will check on the prices of wool or such around here and how much it would cost to send and receive it.
    I absolutely love your work.

  14. Oh I love this!! It puts the baby gifts I made for my sister to shame. I really want to make one of these now. Can’t wait to see it modeled… If she ever comes out! 🙂

  15. That.Is.The.Cutest.Damn.Baby.Sweater.EVER–you rock! Sweet finishing! When she spills food on it she can turn it inside out and it will still work! LOL. Is she here yet????? You are one bad-ass knitter whom I admire.

  16. Hahaha! I expected Intarsia, but the pirate-y goodness? I would have never expected! How AWESOME!

PS – went to Robert yesterday. Results are on my blog. It was fabulous; I will be back.
