Dripping Cables

Two finished knits in one week? Crazy!

Not really. Today’s FO is a pair of socks I’ve been working on since April.

Yes, APRIL.

I always have a pair of socks going as a portable project, and I rarely focus all of my knitting attention on them. I knit on these during a pedicure last week and made great progress, so I decided to go ahead, finish them up, and take some photos.

img_6562.JPG First I had to get Abe to move, then brush off a few tiny black hairs from the backdrop.
img_6563.JPG There we go.

These are the Aran Braided Socks from Knit Picks, knit with Colinette Jitterbug.

I would have made them longer, but Jitterbug doesn’t really offer enough yardage for longer socks.

This photo is another total ripoff from Caro’s awesome photo styling.

img_6599.JPG I have two favorite things about this sock design.

The first thing is the way the cables appear to “drip” right down into the ribbing.

The second thing is how stretchy the finished socks are. Very well-fitting, even on my skinny feet.

img_6593.JPG This is my first pair of short socks. I can see myself probably wearing these around the house.

I can’t see myself wearing short wool socks outside during really cold weather.

I’ll get plenty of use from these, but I’m feeling a little ripped off by the yarn company. They could have given me enough yarn for a normal pair of socks. (It was an impulsive purchase where I didn’t check the yardage.)

Ah, lesson learned.

img_6583.JPG Ambassador Lou.

Yesterday I did a home visit for some potential Basenji Rescue adopters. One of the people in the couple had never met a Basenji before, so Lou came along to remedy that problem.

Lou was such a gentleman, and he totally turned on the charm. Needless to say, the couple can’t WAIT to get their own Basenji now, even after I told them some horror stories.

Here he is, being such a good boy during the car ride there.

  1. I love that you just finished a pair of socks you started in April too. It’s helping me get over the fact that I let mine languish so long. I should have just called it my purse knitting!
I’m grooving on the sock shot with the tattoo. You could make that one your signature foot shot. Oh, and cute socks too!

  2. love the socks and the second pose of you wearing them.

wishing i had come up with it first! i seriously spend a lot of time thinking of how i can pose my finished socks that someone doesn’t already do as their “signature.”

lou is such the good boy. i want to adopt one just looking at him in that shot.

  3. Lovely socks…sucks the yarn company didn’t give you enough yarn for a taller pair! I’ve brought $.5 back out (from April) – hopefully I’ll have FO luck like you did!

I’m glad Ambassador Lou was able to get the couple excited about adoption. I wish more people could meet adopted dogs to really understand what a gift they are!

  4. What a good boy he’s being! Our old border collie, Sam, used to TOTALLY charm any ladies he met. Not so much with the men. Nice job by Lou!!

  5. Love the socks! I would wear them around the house all winter. I have to mention….. LOVE the photos of the socks. If you have visited my blog, you already know that I post a “Phoot Foto” every Friday. This would totally fit the requirements. LOL

Good job, Lou! You are totally doing your part to find a fellow Basenji a home. You deserve a treat. Tell your mommy I said you can have one (or two). LOL

  6. Woo hoo! Congrats on finishing up that UFO, they look great 🙂 It reminds me I really have some I’ve let sit around too long too!

  7. hehe. I take it that Lou did not shred a paper towel for the potential doggie parents.

The socks are cute. I generally prefer short socks, but I haven’t experienced a “real” winter since 1997. It makes a difference 🙂

  8. I love the socks, seem like cold weather ones to me, only need to be a bit longer. 🙂
I love the pic of your dog, you making me think that if I ever did get a dog it would be like one of yours, they seem to be a very well behaved breed.
Molly hasn’t made an appearance yet??

  9. Hi Melissa –

Well, Basenjis aren’t known for being good dogs – I’m so not kidding! That is one of the reasons why Basenji Rescue works so hard to place the dogs so carefully. Trust me…my dogs are cute, but they’re not traditionally “good” dogs. 🙂 You can read more here: http://basenji.20m.com/ReasonsNottoGet.htm

Molly Renee must be comfortable where she is. My sister is now NINETEEN days overdue from her Aug 3 due date. Her doctors are still okay with it, but they’ve moved her due date around a few times. Maybe today is the day!

  10. Awww – what a good boy.

I like your socks, but seeing as how I’m tall with largish feet I don’t think I’ll buy Jitterbug anytime soon.

  11. I guess I must have munchkin feet, because the yardage of Jitterbug won’t be an issue for me at all – I could practically make knee socks with what I’ll have left over! Trekking XXL leaves me with enough leftovers to make a 3rd sock – it is just crazy!

As for Lou? He *is* the charmer. I love Loooooooouuuuu!

  12. You’re right on the Jitterbug yardage; I have short socks too. But I thought that yarn had a luxurious feel and wonderful color.

  13. LOVE those socks!!!! They are so cute!!! One of my fav things about living in New Hampshire is the fact that when it is cold I can wear comfy warm socks!!!

By the way….did you sister have her baby yet?? My friend hasnt had hers yet either…she is not 5 days overdue and ready for the baby to come out!!!

  14. Cold weather, in Houston? Just had to tease you.

I had heard that about Jitterbug. It is a shame. I have some I have not knitted yet.

The nail techs where I get my pedicures are just amused by me sitting there knitting socks. I do that about 50% of the time that I go. They find it really interesting and always ask me alot about it.

  15. We love Jitterbug but didn’t buy any because of the yardage – colors and the yarn, however, are fabulous. I prefer short socks and have small feet so I would probably do just fine with Jitterbug. I love the socks with your tatoo – how perfect!

  16. Lou seems well suited to ambassadorship…so much personality, AND terribly handsome. 🙂

I like the socks! I don’t usually get into thick, knitted socks because I always sit with one foot tucked under. Anything more than thin socks and the pattern starts to get pressed uncomfortably into my skin. I hate sock wrinkles/bumps/texture. It’s unfortunate, really, because I love cute socks. I just have to buy them. I do have a pair that you’d like…pink with white skulls on them, with hearts for eyes and bows on their heads.

How do I always end up telling you about such exciting things when I leave you notes? 😛

  17. The perspective in the first pic of Abe makes him look soooo short and stocky, which I know is not the case. He’s the tallest man..er dog… in the house!

  18. Damn them for not providing more fiber! Houston, ok….NM, not so okay. You would still be cold! Great pattern and very lovely on your foot!
