Whiskey River

I’m TRYING to write a post, but my reason for posting is making it very difficult! Let me explain.

Meet Whiskey River. He’s a 4 month-old Basenji puppy, and he’s my new foster.

Whiskey and seven of his siblings were surrendered to Basenji Rescue last week. They’ve been placed in foster homes all over the state, on their way to their forever homes. (Did I mention, they need homes?)

On Saturday, Wendy (a Basenji Rescue Coordinator) brought four of the pups over to my house for a visit, and so that I could pick my foster.

CUTE, huh? It was so much fun to see all the puppies. Ike stood back and observed, as if he was watching Animal Planet or something.

To give you an idea of how tiny these guys are, here is a shot of Whiskey next to Abe. (A “shot of Whiskey”! See that?)

I’d like to mention that all of the *good* photos in this post were taken by my friend Stephanie. This last one with Abe (the crappy one) was taken by me.

I haven’t lived around a puppy this young since Ike was this age – TWELVE years ago. Here are some things I sort of forgot about puppies:
– Puppies sleep a lot.
– Puppies have sharp teeth.
– Puppies have the attention span of a housefly.
– Puppies smell really good.
– Puppies aren’t as bright as adult dogs.
– Puppies will chew anything at mouth level.
– Puppies get lonesome if they can’t see you.
– Puppies are totally worth it.

As I’m typing this, Whiskey is asleep on my lap. I didn’t pick him as a foster as much as he picked me (and Abe). He is a sweet snuggle pup, already housetrained (with just one accident), and non-destructive. I feel lucky to be a part of this little man’s life on his way to his new home.

  1. So frickin cute !!!!! I want one. Do you have those little thin puppy chew sticks for him to chew on ? I love all your puppy points, so true.
How did he pick you guys ? Cute puppy stories pls !!!!!

  2. Will any of them be coming to the Pacific NW, specifically Ore.? I have a friend who would like to adopt one, but she needs more info and training as to what she is getting into, and we have at least two here in Eugene that could foster & help her gain experience….Thanks,
    Nan, Joe & OoZoe

  3. Oh good lord that’s a cute puppy! My kids have been begging for a Basenji that will play with them and after seeing yours I must admit to being tempted. Our two are 14 & 15 and most of their interest in play has turned to sleep. Good luck with him!

  4. oh my goodness. I need to find out more about what it takes to be an adoptive mom. I have done it once for a human.. so hopefully I have some cred. 🙂 Sending this link to hubbo and son.

  5. When you said the puppy’s name is Whiskey, the first thing that popped into my head was the song “Whiskey River”! Yay for Willie Nelson!

  7. Not to self: Keep repeating through out the day…
“Very good that I am thousands of miles away.”

  8. A few replies –

Whiskey picked me by being a snuggle baby, and he and Abe picked each other by playing. In fact, we thought it was funny that the two black dogs found each other so quickly!

Janna – I was surprised, too about there being so many puppies. Just an especially large litter.

Nan – it is unlikely that any of these pups will travel far for adoption, but once they’re listed on the Basenji Rescue website, anyone can apply to adopt. The adopting family will just need to cover transport costs.

  9. What a cute puppy!!! If I didn’t have so many dogs already (7) I’d be very tempted to adopt one.

  10. Too precious. I’m glad he’s doing well on the house training. When he’s outside that’s one Whiskey River that you definitely want to run dry!

(Couldn’t resist). Can’t wait to meet him!

  11. Whiskey River take my mind,
Don’t let your cuteness torture me.
    Whiskey River please run dry,
You’re oh so sweet, take care of me.

  12. omgosh! he’s so cute and sweet looking. good luck whiskey, you picked a good place to learn all the nice manners at. i could just squeeze him.

  13. Oh so adorable! Oh I was so glad when the puppy teeth went! My dog’s 13 months now – now she’s in the terrible teenage stage!

So nice of you too look after him, that’s one lucky dog!

  14. I was looking for instructions for knitting socks when this came up and believe me if I knew where you were, I would be there in a heartbeat to adopt one of them. I think that Reba and Rascal my Springers would love one also. Rusty the cat would just say Oh My God not another one. I am a school bus driver so there are only a couple hours in a day that I am away from my ‘kids’!

  15. Holy moly! I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen so many cute faces in one place! I want to give them smooches on those crinkled little foreheads. Staci, you must be the patron saint of Basenjis.

How’s Pona doing with his new family?
