Learn to Knit a Christmas Stocking

• changing yarn colors
• sock basics, like working a heel flap, turning the heel, gusset decreases
• duplicate stitch embroidery on your finished stocking

• Size 7 US needles 16” circular needles, size 7 US double-pointed needles

  1. Loved Christmas stocking instruction videos, very easy to follow. I do socks toe up & have problem with top when I bind off the ribbing, very little stretch. Looks like top down will take care of that problem. Thank you. Love your site and will be visiting often.

  2. This is the best webside. Do you have a tutorial on your technique of how you hold your yarn while knitting. I want to learn this too. Thanks,

  3. I’m working on your christmas stocking pattern as we speak. Just love the tutorial. Just want to learnyour knitting technique. Is it english or continental?

  4. In your first video of knitting christmas stockings, you have on a pink short sleeve sweater. Do you have a pattern for that? Keep up the good work. Love this website.

  5. Hi Staci, I absolutely love your website and could watch your tutorials all day. I am very excited about the idea of knitting some stockings for our fireplace this Christmas. I have watched the tutorial and was wondering if the pattern includes the beautiful snowflake shown in the picture? I really love it. x

  6. Hi, Staci
I just went to a local knitting class, which is quite inferior to your style of teaching; and I kept thinking to myself, “Staci can make this much more understandable.” So, my question is: does the stocking have a mitered heel? If not, will you consider doing a video that addresses this? I was fortunate enough to find your tutorials and will always give you full credit when I finally feel that I’m a knitter. Thank you, as always.

  7. Hi Lisa – whoops! I should have made that info available. The finished and blocked stockings are about 6″ wide, and 17″ long from cuff to tip of the toe.

    Hope that helps!

  8. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos! The only thing I’ve ever knitted before was a basic knit stitch scarf, but your videos made it so easy to learn the skills to knit a stocking. My boyfriend doesn’t have a stocking so I always felt bad when my family would open our stockings and he’d just sit there and watch. Now I’m so excited for Christmas because my boyfriend will be able to join in on the fun with my family.

  9. Hi Staci. Just wanted to say thank you for the great pattern and videos. This was my first knitting attempt and the stocking came out beautifully thanks largely to your great tutorials!

  10. Hi Staci,

Let me start by saying I LOVE your website! My question about this holiday stocking…. I want to make several so I was wondering if I could make 2-at-a-time using Magic Loop? and anything special I would need to know about this specific pattern to accomplish this? Thank you so much!

  11. I did it! I made a stocking and it looks good. When my husband pulled out a stocking from his childhood that was knit by his grandmother and suggested I knit stockings for the 4 of us I laughed at him. But the idea stuck in my head and I went googling. I am so glad I came across your website with this pattern and the videos. I watched all the videos first and thought, “Maybe I can do this.” So I downloaded the pattern, which I love how the videos are embedded in the download and bought my supplies and 3 days later I have one stocking done. It is amazing. I considered myself a fairly novice knitter but now I feel a whole world of knitting possibilities has been opened up to me. Thank you!

  12. Staci,

I love your website and tutorials so much. I have learned so much from them. I was wondering where you got that little pink box with the stitch markers. Is it available for ordering online?somewhere?

  13. Hello Staci,

I just finished my Christmas stocking! Thank you so muh for the kitchener (grafting) tutorial. I finally got it after all these years.
I have a question, did you block your stocking? Any suggestions on how to do this? Thank you so much again.

  14. Hi Nancy – thank you for the note. Blocking is totally up to you – I just steam blocked mine to help even everything out.

    Hope that helps!

  15. Quick question. Are the patterns (snowflake, tree) incorporated into the knitting or added as duplicate stitch afterward?
    Thanks!

  16. Hi Staci,
Im fairly new to the knitting world and have been watching your instructional videos. I bought the size 7 circular knitting needles 16″ as your book suggests for this project however, i found that the cord is too long and the ends dont meet. Should i change to needles with a shorter cord or am i missing something?

  17. Shirine – the cast-on and the first few rows can be tight with this project on 16″ circular needles – but they are long enough! Watch this video for Simple Magic Loop to help with the first few rows. After that, your stitches should fit around fine.
    https://verypink.com/2012/10/17/simple-magic-loop/

If you’re still having trouble after the first few rows, it could be that your gauge is tight and you might need to go up a needle size or two. Correct gauge for this pattern is 4.5 stitches per inch.

    Good luck!

  18. THank you for your website, sooo very helpful. I am knitting stocking pattern. When I’m all done what do you do to make a loop to hang? thank you again for such a great website!

  19. Hi Staci,
love your work and website! Do you know if i will be able to read your patterns in my kindle paperwhite?
    thanks!
    daniela

  20. Hi Staci,
I bought this pattern for my kindle paperwhite and works fine, but I cant access the youtube tutorials bc my device does not have internet connection. Would you please email me those links or tell me how can I access them. I got to the heel and need to check your intructions 😉
    Thanks a lot!

  21. Hi Staci..
Just confirming that I’m interpreting the instructions for the Christmas stocking correctly. It states to “knit all rounds until foot measures 8″ from back of heel”. Is that from the gusset (where the heel turns) or from where you rejoin with the mc? I interpret it as from where the heel turns, (due to the finished stocking being 16″ long). Don’t want to end up too long or too short! 🙂 I have been knitting for over 40 years, mainly self-taught, and love your tutorials!! Your explanations are concise, to the point and very well filmed for easy viewing. Thank you! Donna

  22. Hi Donna – you want to measure from the bottom of the heel (the easiest measurement for length), after the turn. Meaning, measuring from the sole of the foot, before the cuff.

  23. Excellent! That’s what I thought. Thank you for your prompt reply. I have two of these to knit…with one almost completed and ready to start another. I love this pattern!!
    Thanks again.
    Donna

  24. I ordered the book and video together from my kindle. I was able to view the first 2 videos on my kindle but none of the other videos came thru. It would load the video and get me to the very pink tutorial part that introduces the video but then it would go black. Is there a way to fix that?thanks for your help.

  25. Hi LeAnn – hmm, I’m not sure what to tell you. All of the parts of the video are there and running fine…you may want to try to view them on something other than your Kindle, or maybe reboot your Kindle?

  26. Staci

I jut finished my first stocking and the heel isn’t laying flat. I know I goofed up on the amount is times I decreased but was wondering if blocking would fix this. Thanks !

  27. Hi Laura – I have no way of answering that…blocking will help, but it really depends on the yarn you used (wool will be more forgiving and the mistakes you made. It’s worth a try, certainly.

  28. I was wondering how to make this pattern bigger. I want to make a larger stocking with size 10 circular needles. Would I have to adjust the amount of stitches?

  29. Hi Kelly – you can read more about modifying patterns on my Frequently Asked Questions page:
    https://verypink.com/frequently-asked-questions/

In short, changing the gauge of this pattern would require an entirely new pattern with new numbers. Going up a needle size (or more) will make the fabric looser, and your stocking will stretch when it’s stuffed! You can try it with bulkier yarn and bigger needles using the pattern as written…I haven’t test knit this myself, but it might render the results you want.

    Good luck!

  30. Thanks! I wanted to use bulkier yarn so I will follow pattern as is and let you know what happens.

  31. Staci – I recently purchased your pattern for the Christmas stocking and was making wonderful progress following the directions and watching your tutorial. Everything is so clear, precise and easy to follow. I actually made it to the foot without a problem when I started knitting (I did many stitches but was not counting so don’t know how many) before I realized my stitch marker was missing. Now I have no idea where the beginning of my row is. Is there any way you can help me figure it out? Thank you!!

  32. Jean – after you finish the heel, the marker will go at the very center of the heel (which will be on the sole of the foot). Glad you’re enjoying the pattern – hope that helps!

  33. I want to purchase the pattern on amazon. It states kindle edition but can I use it on iBooks for the iPad?

  34. Hi Tania – I think the eBook version of this pattern, purchased on Amazon, is viewable with the free Kindle Reader app. We are producing our eBooks in other formats, and ePub versions will be available sometime soon, but we will have to sell those via Google Books, which isn’t set up yet. But the Kindle app for iPad is free – I use it all the time, and it’s a great app. It is my understanding that Amazon sells eBooks exclusively for the Kindle app or Kindle Readers.

    Hope that helps!

  35. Thank you. Just downloaded the kindle app and purchased the pattern on amazon. Can’t wait to get started!! Hope I can finish 3 before Christmas.

  36. Hi Staci. I just started knitting but I have a question. When I get to the marker when making the cuff am I starting k2 p2 again or am I continuing k2 p2 non stop?
