Fancy Stitch Combos – Purse Stitch

Instructions for working this stitch:
– Cast-on an even number of stitches
– Work every row: K1, *yo, SSK*, repeat between *s to last stitch, K1

This week we’re starting a new series called Fancy Stitch Combos. In this series I hope to demonstrate stitches that have been requested, and hopefully introduce you to some new stitches that I think are pretty and useful. Feel free to drop me a note if you’d like to submit an idea for a video in this series.

Information on things you’ll see in this video:

The sweater I’m wearing is my Ombre Dyed Sweater, pattern + video tutorial.

The scarf on the mannequin is One Row Handspun Scarf, knit with Cascade 220.

The bulky yarn I used in the sample is Berroco Peruvia Quick.

The yellow DK weight yarn I used is Madeline Tosh Sport.

The wood needles I use for demonstration are by Clover, size 10.5 (6.5mm).

  1. Thanks so much for this tutorial. What a great stitch and nice pattern. I like the way you let us know those little tips like, bigger needle, smaller yarn, lacier pattern. Thanks again.
    Blessings Gail.

  2. I love your trick of making knots to indicate thevsize needle you have used. BRILLIANT,

  3. I am so enjoying all your different stitches. I’m wondering if you can tell me what this stitch is. I have seen this in books but wasn’t sure what the stitch is called. You k 2. YO, knit 3, and then pull the yo over the 3 sts. Hope this makes sense. It looks like a horizontal line across the work. Thank you for all your wonderful videos.

  4. Hi, I’m having trouble with the pattern for the 10 stitch blanket by Elizabeth Zimmerman. A buddy on Kniting Paradise suggested checking in with you, she thought you were working on a tutorial. I hope so. I don’t have any trouble with any of the stitches, just the written pattern.
Hoping you can help and thank You for your website!

  5. Hi Wilma – what a coincidence! I’m working on a tutorial for the 10-stitch blanket right now. It should be released in August.

  6. staci your awsome i love your work those dish cloths are relly coming in handy and im just 11 years old

  7. Hi Staci!
Can this purse stitch be worked in the round? I would be so grateful if you could let me know if and how this can be done! Many thanks in advance! Regards, Sonja

  8. Sonya – yes, this stitch can be worked in-the-round. I haven’t test knit this myself, but this is how I think it will go:

CO an even number of stitches, place marker, and join in the round.
Round 1: *YO, SSK*, repeat to end of round
Round 2: *K2tog, YO*, repeat to end of round.

If you want to test knit a little sample and let us know how it goes, I know others will appreciate it, too!
    🙂

  9. Hi, I have recently retired from work and have taken up knitting ( and felting) again – your videos and patterns are really helpful and inspiring . I have 2 questions that I hope you can help me with:

    1) When knitting colored bobbles on apiece ( by knitting/ purling 5 times into a stitch, is there anyway to stop the background colour showing in the bobble?

    2) Do all knitted stitches felt the same way – i.e if I was to felt something in say purse stitch or fisherman’s rib, would the effect be different from garter stitch?

    Many thanks

  10. Hi Gloria – thank you for the note. Regarding your questions –

    1. I have not test knit this myself, but I’m guessing that it’s either the stitch before the bobble or the stitch after that is invading the bobble color? The only way I can think to fix that is to knit the offending stitch in the bobble color.
    2. No, all knitted stitches do not felt the same way. Not only that, but the same stitch can felt very differently in different yarns, different gauges, and different yarn colors. A strong stitch, (like a puffy cable) is likely to show after felting, like in this felted bag: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/billington-bag
