Sixes and Threes Cowl

Sixes and Threes SM patt and VP

Stripes and solids, no wrong side, no seam! The Sixes and Threes Cowl is a free pattern and three-part video tutorial.

This pattern is a FREE RAVELRY DOWNLOAD.

Size: (after grafting) 25” long by 5.5” wide (before grafting, “scarf” is 50” long)
Needles: Size 4 US (3.5mm) 16” circs and size 4 US (3.5mm) set of DPNs, crochet hook size G or H
Yarn: Three 50 gram hanks of any fingering weight yarn, in three colors. I used Louet Gems Fingering, (this yarn has been discontinued). A good substitute for Gems is Knit Picks Stroll sock yarn, but any fingering weight yarn will work.
Additional Materials: tapestry needle for grafting, a few feet of scrap worsted-weight yarn
Gauge: 6.5 sts per inch, 8 rows per inch

darker cowl SM patt and VP

Colors I used of Louet Gems Fingering
Lighter-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Cream, Steel Gray, and Seafoam Green
Darker-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Goldenrod, Burgundy, and Pewter

Instructions for Working Three-Color Swatch
(Before starting swatch, name each color – “Color 1”, “Color 2”, and “Color 3”. It won’t make a difference which is which, they are used and striped with each other. Remember these color names, because they are referenced in the cowl pattern.)
Using Color 1, CO 30 stitches.
Knit 9 rows (5 ridges).
Row 1 (RS): K across all stitches
Row 2: K 5, P 20, K 5
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more (4 rows total), then switch to Color 2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 7 times (14 rows total), then switch to Color 3.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice (4 rows total), then knit 10 rows (5 ridges).
BO on RS.

Information on things you’ll see in this video:
The 16″ circular needles I use in the video are by Knitter’s Pride, I use both Novas (metal) and Dreamz (wood).

The crochet hook I use is from a Waves set by Knitter’s Pride.

The ball-chain stitch markers I use are from a seller on Etsy who no longer has a shop, but similar markers can be found here.

The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.

The striped sweater I’m wearing is store-bought. 🙂

The nail polish I’m wearing is by Julep, color “Lupita”.

  1. Margie – I’ve just been in touch with Louet. It is true, the mill did burn down, but they are still making yarn, and they are expecting a shipment of Gems (including 18 new colors) in September. For a large selection of the current colors, WEBS (www.yarn.com) has lots of Gems in stock. Additionally, the VERYPINK coupon code is still valid, and the pattern is still available.

If you have questions, you can contact Louet customer service. They are very good!

  2. I’ve tried purchasing the correct number of skeins through Louet and WEBS and neither will honor the VERYPINK promo code. Kind of frustrating. I’d just like the pattern and am willing to buy the yarn but apparently I’m too late.

  3. Thanks Staci for your well produced videos. Super enjoy watching them.

I am now preparing to start this project. I have found that the “Instructions for Working Three-Color Swatch” here seemed not matching the project after watching your video twice.

I wonder if it is my misunderstanding of the instructions, pardon for my poor English 🙂

    Have a good day.

  4. Hi Staci,

I am a big fan of you and your knitting. I wish to get the pattern for sixes and three cowls but before I get to know that it is only available on buying gems fingering weight yarn from Louet, I already got Wool of Andes from knitpicks website.

I want to knit this cowl and wish to have the pattern, Please guide me the way I can get the pattern.

    Thanks a lot

    Malini

  5. I can’t find the colors that you used on the lighter colored cowl. I REALLY want to use the same colors. Any suggestions as to where I can find them?

  6. Have you checked both the Louet website and WEBS (www.yarn.com)? If you don’t see them there, you can contact Louet customer service for guidance.

  7. Hi my name is Beverley,

I live in the UK, I’m an AVID viewer of Very Pink. One of your tutorials for a Cowl, sixes and three’s, caught my daughters eye. She wanted me to knit one for her upcoming birthday. I’m sure you know what I’m about to say…

Its virtually impossible to get a copy of the pattern without a yarn purchase, but that’s impossible because there are no retailers selling that specific yarn in the UK. I’d be extremely grateful if you could advise where I might get a copy of the pattern. I’m welling to pay, but its finding the pattern.
The equivalent UK yarn weight I think would be UK 4 ply….

I’m against the clock as my daughters birthday’s in less than 10days. I would really appreciate your assistance.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you

  8. Beverly – Louet has part of their business in Holland, so I know that they ship to Europe, from Europe. Also, WEBS (www.yarn.com) ships Louet yarns internationally, and they are distributing the pattern. Beyond that, Louet is in charge of distributing the pattern, and I have no control over it – you can contact their customer service on their website, they are very good about getting back in touch with people quickly.
