Tinking Increases and Decreases

Whoops – you’ve made a mistake several stitches back, and “tinking” (unraveling one stitch at-a-time) is your best option for correcting the mistake – but the row you’ve knit is full of increases and/or decreases. In this video, I show you how to tink back through common increases and decreases.

Other videos available on tinking:
Basic Tinking
Advanced Tinking

Information on things you’ll see in this video:

The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.

The needles I’m using are Knitter’s Pride Bamboo Double-Pointed Needles.

The nail polish I’m wearing is by Julep, color “Amanda”.

My silver ring is actually a knitting needle gauge, and can be found here.

  1. When I tink SSK and PSSO decreases, I do it differently. I’m not a fan of creating loose stitches, so for SSK, I go in through the back of the 2 stitches, not the front. This way my stitches are on the LH needle when I remove the yarn and I do not have fix twisted stitches. For the PSSO, I just lift the passed over stitch over the knit stitch place it on the RH needle and then do a normal tink. I figure I’m not alone in this, but in case someone wants to practice these options, they can.

  2. This video is a great review, even for a more experienced knitter. Thanks so much for your great videos and patterns. Love them all.

  3. I used to freak out – I mean really freak out – every time I dropped a stitch. Well, I don’t anymore and it’s thanks to you, Staci, and your fabulous video tutorials. You have made knitting so much more enjoyable for me and I’ve been at it for several years now. I just recently taught myself Portuguese style knitting and wondered if you’d ever tried it. Would love to know what you think of it. Thanks!!

  6. Wow- I don’t know how all those question marks came up! They were typed as exclamation marks. Ha! My husband wants to know if you give typing lessons? We now know what happened. I sent happy faces and they came up as question marks

  7. I really appreciate how clear your videos are, and that you thoughtfully included how each increase and decrease are made as well.
