Bento Box Quilt, Part 2, Pattern & Video Tutorial

This pattern is a FREE RAVELRY DOWNLOAD. Be sure to watch Part 1 of the video tutorial, which includes an explanation of the construction of the blanket. When you click through to download your pattern, you’ll also see the free coloring page available.

Size: 60″ square, (152 cm)
Needles: Size 10.5 US (6.5mm) 24″ circulars and 32″ circulars. (You can knit the whole thing on 32″ circulars, but if you have an interchangeable set, it is nice to work the mitered squares on the shorter cord, then switch to the longer cord for the border.) You will also need a needle one size larger (11 US, 8.0mm) for binding-off.
Yarn: KPC Gossyp Chunky Organic Cotton (see below for yarn amounts in each color)
Additional Materials: One ring stitch marker, tapestry needle for seaming and weaving ends
Gauge: 3 stitches per inch in stockinette

Yarn Amounts:
Main Color (Ivory in my blanket): 13 balls
Color 1 (I used Celery): 9 balls
Color 2 (I used Rosie): 5 balls
Border Color (I used Sunrise): 7 balls

  1. Hi Staci–Quick question. Why do you leave seams for the border? Technically couldn’t you just do kfbs in the corners? Or is it because of cord length restrictions?

  2. Bethany – you could pick up the entire border and knit it at once with no corner seams. That would take a very, very long circular needle, and alternating rounds of knitting and purling. It can be done with the same kfb increases as used in the mitered squares. It is a pretty significant modification to the pattern.

    • That sounds dreadful. I lost my mind on how large this blanket actually is, and how much I hated doing all those purls on my Miss Grace shawl border. Thanks 🙂

  3. Staci this pattern is genius, thank you so much for figuring it all out for us And sharing it for free, you are a dear.
I do not want to make this quite so big, can i decrease the size a little by using a smaller size needle or is it better to decrease the number of garter ridges like you recommended in the pattern.
Also have you tried making this in another yarn besides the cotton and are there any yarns you would avoid for this pattern
Again thanks for all your great instruction videos

  4. Hi Staci! Can’t wait to try this pattern!

Do you recommend blocking the individual squares before seaming? Or is it not necessary?

    Thank you!
