Tight Circular Cast-Ons

In this video I demonstrate what to do when your stitches don’t fit around your 16″ needles.

The Knitter’s Pride needles I use in the video can be found here:
Dreams 16″
Platina 16″
Royale 16″
Bamboo DPNs

You can find more information about Knitter’s Pride needles from these retailers:

The yarn I’m using for demonstration is Berroco Vintage Worsted.

My nail polish is by Julep, color Whitney.

  1. Does a Tight Cast-On = an overall Tight Gauge?

I just watched ‘Tight Circular Cast-ons”. Could a tight cast-on indicate that the knitter is a ‘tight knitter’ and their gauge is ‘wrong’ for the entire pattern. Those of us who are ‘loose’ knitters have to always go down 1-3 needles sizes to get gauge. If the issue is only a tight cast-on, just cast-on with larger needles and then go to usual needles after cast-on. If the issue is overall tight knitting, go up two sizes as you suggest but don’t change needles after the cast-on. Do the whole project in larger needles.

  2. Su – in this video, I’m assuming that the knitter is getting the correct stitch gauge, but they are unable to join on the circular needles because their cast-on is tight. (I get this question all the time from people knitting on 16″ circs.) Stitch gauge is a different issue from what I address here. 3. Another great video, Thanks, Staci. I learn so much from you, and can tell how much my knitting has improved – all thanks to you!

  4. thank you for another much needed, by me, video. I love to watch you knit your hands move with such easy.

    thanks again,

  5. Thank you for this timely video. I am preparing to make baby hats for charity and always struggle with a tight cast on row with 16 inch circulars! You’re the best!

  6. I love your Magic Loop video because I hate DPN’s with a boiling passion. Can I knit a hat using Magic Loop all the way through the decrease without using any DPN’s at all? Thanks so much!

  7. Christy – yes, I personally think it’s very fiddly to use magic loop when there are only a few stitches, but it certainly can be done.

  8. Thank you for demonstrating the Royale interchangeable needles. I had to switch to bamboo several years ago because of arthritis and missed the metal points clicking together. When I saw the Royale, I asked my husband for a set for Christmas. I received the set yesterday and took out the size 8s to try. Best of both worlds! I love them!
