Carrying Fair Isle Floats

In this video I demonstrate a couple of ways to carry floats in fair isle knitting.

The Knitter’s Pride Royale 16″ needle set I use in the video can be found here.

You can find more information about Knitter’s Pride needles from these retailers:

My Learn to Knit Fair Isle tutorial (the hat pattern shown in the video) can be found here.

The yarn I’m using for demonstration is Berroco Vintage worsted.

My nail polish is by Julep, color Whitney.

  1. Thank you. Excellent video! I bought the pattern. Question: Is this the same as Stranded knitting?

  2. Barbee – yes and no…I don’t use the term “stranded knitting” because I think it’s used in different ways, and it isn’t always clear. I believe “stranded knitting” sometimes includes all colorwork, including mosaic (slipped stitch) knitting.

    • Interesting answer. My understanding is that Fair Isle Knitting is very specific to the patterns and knitting style of Fair Isle, an island that is part of the Shetland Islands. Stranded Knitting on the other hand refers to all stranded colourwork including Fair Isle, Icelandic, Norwegian, etc. There are specific patterns that define Icelandic and Norwegian just as their are for Fair Isle.
