Stripes and solids, no wrong side, no seam! The Sixes and Threes Cowl is a free pattern and three-part video tutorial.
This pattern is a FREE RAVELRY DOWNLOAD.
Size: (after grafting) 25” long by 5.5” wide (before grafting, “scarf” is 50” long)
Needles: Size 4 US (3.5mm) 16” circs and size 4 US (3.5mm) set of DPNs, crochet hook size G or H
Yarn: Three 50 gram hanks of any fingering weight yarn, in three colors. I used Louet Gems Fingering, (this yarn has been discontinued). A good substitute for Gems is Knit Picks Stroll sock yarn, but any fingering weight yarn will work.
Additional Materials: tapestry needle for grafting, a few feet of scrap worsted-weight yarn
Gauge: 6.5 sts per inch, 8 rows per inch
Colors I used of Louet Gems Fingering
Lighter-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Cream, Steel Gray, and Seafoam Green
Darker-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Goldenrod, Burgundy, and Pewter
Instructions for Working Three-Color Swatch
(Before starting swatch, name each color – “Color 1”, “Color 2”, and “Color 3”. It won’t make a difference which is which, they are used and striped with each other. Remember these color names, because they are referenced in the cowl pattern.)
Using Color 1, CO 30 stitches.
Knit 9 rows (5 ridges).
Row 1 (RS): K across all stitches
Row 2: K 5, P 20, K 5
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more (4 rows total), then switch to Color 2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 7 times (14 rows total), then switch to Color 3.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice (4 rows total), then knit 10 rows (5 ridges).
BO on RS.
Information on things you’ll see in this video:
The 16″ circular needles I use in the video are by Knitter’s Pride, I use both Novas (metal) and Dreamz (wood).
The crochet hook I use is from a Waves set by Knitter’s Pride.
The ball-chain stitch markers I use are from a seller on Etsy who no longer has a shop, but similar markers can be found here.
The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.
The striped sweater I’m wearing is store-bought. 🙂
The nail polish I’m wearing is by Julep, color “Lupita”.
You make it look so easy and give me confidence that I can do it! I love your work, you videos are so easy to follow. You have taught me how to knit. I learned so many additional things in this video. Thank you.
Beautiful cowl! I can’t wait to get started on it!
I just went to Louete’s site, selected my 3 colors of yarn and started the checkout process. There is no place to put the coupon code.
When viewing the yarns, one option is to select your cowl pattern for $7.50 but still no place to enter the coupon code. I stopped before entering my credit card information because the yarns without the pattern just adds to my stash.
Any suggestions?
Peggy – I just forwarded your question on to the folks at Louet, they say you enter the code after you enter payment info, before confirming the order. If you have more questions, you can contact Louet customer service directly (they’re great) – 1-800-897-6444
Hope that helps!

Staci-
Wow so many super tips in your videos! I think I can manage a provisional cast on now AND STRIPES! 😉
I have a question though: would tying the ends of the provisional cast on make that little opening smaller? I ask because I made a hat last year with a different cast on and the connection continues to drift apart.
I Absolutely LOVE your videos. Please keep making them 😉
Just an FYI for those wishing to order the yarns and pattern. Do NOT put the Very Pink Pattern in your cart. The coupon code, VERYPINK is what adds the pattern to your cart at no charge. You must enter your payment information BEFORE you use the coupon code.
Seems a little backackwards to me but it worked like a dream!
Thanks, Staci for all your help!
Monica – the provisional CO is eventually removed, so tying it in a knot wouldn’t be permanent, but it could help with keeping the first few rows tight.

I absolutely adore this! I have purchased several of your patterns and each and every one is a dream. I have one small caveat with this…I live overseas and I cannot seem to find out if Louet North America ships internationally. I will contact them tomorrow, in the meantime, is there any way I can purchase the pattern on its own? I’m more than happy to pay for it even if I am unable to purchase the yarn. Thank you for sharing your passion, it’s intoxicating. 🙂
Thank you!
Hi Kate – thank you for the note. I designed this pattern, but distribution is totally in the hands of Louet. I suggest contacting them directly – here is a link to their “contact us” page:

Done and done. Their customer service is top notch. All ordered and I cannot wait to cast on. Now the waiting part which is the worst! Thanks so much!
Hi Staci — you mention the pattern will be emailed, but I just spoke to Louet on the phone and they say no, it will be physically mailed with my yarn. She did say they might send via email in a few days but that wasn’t for sure.
Thought you might want to know 🙂
Yes – thank you, Laura. I’ll follow up with them to see why that changed!
S t a c i
I just ordered my three color choices and can’t wait to make this. thank you so much for the wonderful tutorials. You helped me learn to knit a little over a year ago and I am seriously hooked.
Now to count the days…. 😀
Laura, thank you for the info about the pattern. I think a hard copy is a good thing. I can’t wait to get the yarn!
JUST LOVED this …learned SO much! Always enjoy you!! Many thanks!!!
Hi Staci,
You mentioned we need 1 hank of each color. Is that 1 color of each?
Thank you!
Ananta
Ananta – three hanks are necessary to make this cowl. You need one hank each color, three hanks total.

I love this cowl. I ordered the yarn and the order was filled through Knit Bin. I received the yarn yesterday. However, I did not get the pattern. I emailed Knit Bin and they said they just fill the yarn and that I wasn’t the first person to contact them with this problem. They said I needed to contact Louet North America. I did and got an email from them saying I had to place another order for more yarn to get the pattern. This CAN’T be the right answer. Can you help me get the pattern? I can copy my receipt for the delivered yarn. I can do whatever is needed, but I’d really like the pattern so I can start on the cowl with the incredible yarn. Thanks.
Hi Maggie – I’m sorry, I can’t help you here. The pattern is distributed by Louet, and the instructions for getting the pattern are to follow the link to the Louet site, and to use the coupon code VERYPINK when checking out. I’m not distributing the pattern, nor are other retailers. I wish there was more I could do for you!

I absolutely love your videos and patterns. You speak very well and your patterns are enjoyable to knit. I can’t wait to receive this one and get started.
Hi Staci,
I love this cowl and would love to try it out, but I got yarn for Christmas so I don’t need to purchase any. Is there anyway to get the pattern for free with out purchasing?
Robin – this tutorial (pattern design, production, etc) is sponsored by Louet, and therefore is only available through through them, with pattern purchase.
S t a c i
I wanted to update, they ARE emailing the pattern now.
I loved the yarn so much, I went back and bought three more colors for a second cowl. At checkout I didn’t use the code, since I already had the pattern (hard copy came with my first order), but the day I placed my second yarn order, I had an email with the pattern. 😀
My Louet order will be here NY Eve according today’s shipping notification!
I can’t wait!
I ordered Cream, Pink Panther and Steel Grey
Thanks Staci!
Me again. ..i didn’t get an digital pattern with my order, should I have?
Thanks Staci
I’m not sure, Teresa…you will get your pattern, but most likely emailed to you during business hours.

Hi Staci and viewers,
Just an update on the stitch markers. The owner of the shop contacted me that the shop has been stocked up so if you all still interested register and place your orders. They sell out really fast! If unlucky then Staci’s alternative still has some in stock.
Cheers Ananta
Hi Staci–
Is the pattern only available with yarn purchase? I could swear I saw the pattern for sale, but that link is gone now. I have some lovely yarn I’d like to use and I’d like to buy the pattern.
Bethany – the pattern is only available through Louet, with yarn purchase. Louet does have the pattern on their website as a product, but that was only to get it into their inventory, and it is not for individual sale.
S t a c i
How many chains do you crochet. Thanks
Rebecca – in the video, I demonstrate the techniques used. All of the information you’ll need to knit the cowl (including CO number) are in the written pattern. You can get your free pattern with yarn purchase, more info is on this web page where you commented: https://verypink.com/2014/12/17/sixes-and-threes-cowl/

This cowl is beautiful, but I just hope you don’t do many collaborations like this in future. There a number of reasons that people can’t or won’t be able to obtain the pattern. So while the video has very useful technical demonstrations in it, the pattern itself, such a beautiful cowl, is a tease to many of us. There’s basically no way to get this pattern for less than $27, more than three times the pattern’s listed cost. And to get the pattern for “free” I have to spend about $40. I have a local yarn shop to support and not being able to see the colors in person and feel the yarn myself makes me even less likely to buy yarn online. And being forced to buy yarn to obtain the pattern makes me not want to buy yarn from Louet at all, just on principle.
I know they need to promote their yarn, but this feels less like promotion and more like twisting people’s arms to buy their product. So please try not to do this too often? You are awesome and I love your patterns (I’ll be making one of your sweaters from my mother’s birthday) and I’d be very sad if I was locked out of knitting your designs because of things like this.
T Roberts – you can buy the yarn at your local yarn shop. With receipt, Louet will send the pattern to you.
S t a c i
@Staci Really? I know my yarn shop doesn’t carry Louet yarns. (Thank you for your quick reply, though my isn’t.)
Hello Staci.
I just received my order of louet yarn and your lovely pattern I couldn’t be happier. I was wondering though if you could tell me the order of the colors you used? It would help me a lot to visualize the order of my own colors. You can send the reply to my email if you don’t want it on the wall. Thank you in advance.
Kristen – the order really doesn’t matter, it literally doesn’t matter. Each color touches the other two colors, and is striped with the other two colors. Any order you put them in, your results will be the same.
S t a c i
Staci,
Is there a way to purchase the pattern by itself. I have the perfect yarn for this project already and will love to just get the pattern.
Thank you,
Haydee
Haydee – this free pattern is only available through Louet, with yarn purchase.
S t a c i
I ordered the free pattern from Louet and the yarn about 5 days ago. Louet sent me a confirmation number. Now today they sent an email saying that the pattern order was cancelled. So now I have the yarn on the way but not the pattern. Any ideas about this?
I sent the previous comment.
Arlene – I have no control over the pattern/yarn orders, you will need to talk with Louet customer service (they are very good): 1-800-897-6444

This being a cowl is it absolutely necessary to knit a swatch? You mention that the reason you knitted the swatch with all three colors is because the cowl takes nearly all the yarn to complete the cowl. I knit rather tight and if the gauge doesn’t meet the measurements, then there will not be enough yarn left to knit another swatch or finish the cowl. Thanks. I really enjoy your site.
Pam – if you want the scarf to end up the same width and length (wrapping twice around your neck), it is important to match gauge by knitting a swatch.
S t a c i
Staci…quick question…I have achieved gauge with size 6 needle BUT my stitches look loose and not tidy to me..is this the way it should look before washing/blocking?
Thanks in advance!
My question is the same as Teresa’s above. My size 4 needles produced about 9.5 stitches per inch. But I did reach the correct gauge with size 6. Will it all block out properly after washing?
Rebecca – if you have an early version of the pattern, the gauge was incorrect. The correct gauge is 6.5 stitches per inch. Changing the needle size to get correct gauge is normal.

This was such a fun pattern to make. I’m almost done with the second one. Fast and easy knitting. Next project will be Rodeo Drive Poncho.
Help – I got to the last step of doing the Kitchner stitch. I have set it up according to your video with the circular needles and 3 double pointed needles. I have no problem working the stitch until I get to the last set of double, pointed needles when I realize that the work is twisted, almost like I need to pull part of it through to reverse it. I have ripping everything out, re knitted several rows, put everything back on the needles, set it all up and ended up with the same problem when I got to the last double pointed needle. I am now ripping everything out again but need some tips before I do this again. Unfortunately your video on this last stage does not go beyond the first of the three double pointed needles. I am doing something wrong between the first and second or the second and third double pointed needle. I have everything folded on my lap and don’t move anything. I can’t figure it out.
Carole – sorry you’re having trouble, I can’t imagine where you might have gone wrong! (I anticipate as many issues as I can, and demonstrate avoiding them in the videos.) You may want to visit your local yarn shop with your work and get their advice. I have a feeling you’re getting something mixed up with the DPNs somewhere through the process, possibly starting incorrectly. Your best bet is to show your work to someone who can take a look and give you advice. Good luck!
