Another use for sock yarn…I’ll bet you have some yarn handy for these mitts! This is an intermediate pattern and three-part video tutorial. The pattern includes instructions for either an “open” or “closed” thumb.
Sizes: Small/Medium and Medium/Large (they are very stretchy…you can see in the video that both sizes actually fit me. S/M will fit narrower women’s wrists, and M/L will fit wider women’s wrists).
Needles: Size US 1 (2.5mm); it is your choice if you want to use double-pointed needles, 9” circulars, FlexiFlips, or magic loop on a long circular; also a size US 3 needle (3.25mm) for the bind-off.
Yarn: 100 grams of fingering (sock) weight yarn
Additional Materials: two ring stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving ends
Gauge: 9 stitches per inch
Pattern & links to three-part video tutorial $6 US.

If you can knit these, you can knit socks, too! Here are a few of my sock patterns/tutorials that use the same German Short Row technique:

Sidewalk Talk Flip-Flop Socks
Sling Heel Socks
Toe-Up Socks Using German Short Rows
The yarn I used in my mitts:
Rainbow striped mitts: Two Sisters Big Sky Base, in Make it Pop (striped) and a mini skein of Bright Pink
Pinks/Purple striped mitts: Turtlepurl Turtletoes in City Girl with the extra little hank of gold yarn
The needles I use in this video are Knitter’s Pride Ginger.
The plastic snaps I used are Kam Snaps, ordered here on Amazon: KAM Snaps Starter Kit
My finished mitts weigh 53g (smaller size) and 75g (larger size) per pair.
Wow. These look amazing and cannot wait to knit these. Just waiting on my new Ginger DPNs (great review too). I was wondering if you had a video showing the whip stitch? I think I might be overlooking it, and this will be my first time attaching something to my knitting. Thank you, Latanya.
Hi Staci! This video was very helpful, but did I miss the part where you pick up and work the thumb stitches?
Vikki – that part is explained in the pattern, but I don’t demonstrate it in the video.
