Deeply Immersed

Must get off the computer.

Must get back to what I was doing.

Can’t.

Stop…

img_6645.JPG Harry Potter books arrived in the mail. Well, the first six, at least.

I have a book to my nose every minute that I’m not watching this:

img_6658.JPG I’m half-way through the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Lots of wizards and goblins in my life right now.

I think I already watched the first two movies ages ago, but watching them back-to-back makes a big difference for me in following the story.

I understand so many pop culture references now. I know who Strider is! I know who Arwen is!

Yeah, sometimes the bandwagon picks me up much later than everyone else.

img_6663.JPG And, this. I haven’t posted about this project before, but I’m nearly finished. It’s a thick, 100% washable wool blanket for Molly Renee. The sort of blanket that she can treat roughly without ruining it.

As with every knitted baby blanket, when I near the end, I start to knit furiously. Trying to END THE MONOTONY. Besides, my next project is calling to me. (Since I’m a one-project-at-a-timer, I won’t start the next one until this one is complete.)

Almost there.

img_6654.JPG Naturally, these guys are the best reading/movie watching/knitting buddies a gal could ask for.

My friend, a.k.a. “Strider’s Mistress”, let me borrow her Lord of the Rings DVDs. Her Basenji happens to be named “Strider”. I’ll have this all figured out soon.

  1. YOU are so much more disciplined than I.

I have FOUR knitting projects going right now, My favorite though is a sweater called ‘peso’ in Berroco Peruvia. It’s so sowft. And a modular shawl I’ve got going. That’s all…nothing else…I swear…kind of.

  2. Decided to rewatch the LOTR movies, got a late start yesterday so only managed the first one, but that’s going on the already lengthy todo list for the week.

I don’t think I’m going to mention how many things I have on the go…I wish I had a little bit of your discipline!

  3. I’ve been thinking lately about watching the LOTR movies consecutively, too. I’ve already seen them all and read the books but want to watch again. We own all three and have maybe watched part of one.

Those guys have to be the best movie watching companions. I keep thinking about how “leetle” they are.

  4. I would say “nerd alert!” but I guess that’s not really true. 🙂

Oh, whenever you finish the movies and the HP books, please read The Lord of the Rings, the actual book. (It’s one book, by the way.) It’s a really great piece of literature. I love it so much that last summer, I took a Lord of the Rings philosophy class, which was fantastic. (pun intended)

  5. You know, you should do what I’ve started doing: listen to Jim Dale read Harry Potter to you WHILE you’re on the computer! Lot’s of fun! Makes me feel like a little kid having someone read me a story.

  6. Wow – sounds like a busy weekend. Don’t feel bad for being late to the bandwagon, I haven’t even found it yet – although I want to! Your blankie looks very nice and I’m sure Molly Renee will appreciate the blanket for many years to come!

  7. We did a LOTR marathon a couple of years ago with some friends. It started around 8:00pm and was an all nighter. One of our pals has a presentation projector so it was really like watching a movie. Everyone had to keep everyone awake. That was “the rule”. Until like 4:00am or so, when only the hardcore watchers were keeping “the rule”.

I still haven’t read Deathly Hollows. I can’t believe it as I pre-ordered the last two on Amazon to come to my doorstep on release day. I have to be careful I don’t read any spoilers!

Can’t wait to see what will be on your needles next!

  8. Too funny since I am also reading through all the Harry Potter books: currently in the middle of #4. My (21-year-old) daughter got me hooked this summer since we watched the first 4 movies prior to ‘Order of the Phoenix’. Sometimes it is all we talk about (all the plot and character twists). My daughter and I both sound like a couple of nerds.

I made a recent social faux pas. . . shortly after the 7th book was released it was mentioned that I was reading the books, and when asked about the 2 main characters that were to be killed off, it was OBVIOUS I had way too much information in answering their question! I was at a city fundraising event and speaking with our City Manager and Chamber President. I don’t know if they will ever have the same opinion of me. My daughter even said, “mom I don’t talk about it like a 12 year-old”.

  9. You are so disciplined about your projects. I have WAY too many on needles to mention here. I must try to be better although I work better this way for some reason. Good for you to watch LOTR, better you than me. First, one movie is a huge investment of time since that time is so sacred, when kids are in bed. Have fun with it all!

  10. Oh and BTW, we’ve been considering renaming our big black lab mix, Sirius Black. Yes truly obsessed with the HP thing. May be a good time to take up that knitting.

  11. i just recently finished deathly hallows. i was reluctant to even start it, only because it really meant it would be over when i was done. so i think i’m going to go back and re-read them all. lil doll is over half done with #4, she started them when she was 8. she got distracted when she started #4 and it’s been over a year for her… i loved reading lotr and i loved watching the movies. i try to be good and read the book before the movie.
this weekend i was introduced to grey’s anatomy. i love my friend allison for introducing me to it, but i hate her for getting me addicted.
i need to get my crochet hook out again. it’s getting to be that time of year… and it’s cold and rainy here today. perfect blanket making weather. 🙂
molly will love her aunt staci blanket. i still have my “bee-bye” and my teddy bear… 😀

  12. what a pretty color of pink! Did I miss something, hasn’t Molly shown up yet? holy cow, she had better hurry before you have time to knit a whole basinette, which just might end your knitting career. you know, blisters and all…ouch!

  13. Welcome to the world of Harry Potter! My mom introduced me to the books when she gave me 1-4 for Christmas several years ago. I started the first one and was hooked. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. 🙂

I have several UFOs at the moment: a scarf for my dad, a scarf for my stepmother, my second sock (my first sock is still without its mate), and an argosy scarf that I’m knitting for my boyfriend’s sister (which I’m so addicted to knitting that I should finish before the weekend). I like variety!

  14. Ok, I”ll admit here on the World Wide Web that I have not watched any of the LOTR movies and am not sure I ever will. I haven’t even read any of the books. I got all wrapped up in the Chronicles of Narnia and that’s about as far as my fantasy world went. I have read all of the HP novels including the latest. Love them!

Btw, the blanket is adorable! That Molly Renee is one lucky, and stylish, little chickie!

  15. FYI….Keiki’s original name was Arwen. Her foster mom named her that before we adopted her. Thank goodness she was only 10 weeks old when I flew to FL to get her….the name change was easy!!
Her foster named her Arwen because she has HUGE ears!!! LOL But I couldnt let her keep that name…it didnt suit her.

  16. Hm, as a semi-Lord of the Ring nerd myself the DVDs in the pic don’t appear to be the EXTENDED versions of the movie…the extended ones are like 9 zillion hours long…fun fun! And really…I can’t get ENOUGH of Viggo anyway…

  17. Fun! The Lord of the Rings movies were on TV here this weekend, so my husband and I watched them again — and you can’t go wrong with Harry Potter!

  18. I think my favourite harry potter book was the goblet of fire. You’ll have to let me know which one your favourite is! and of course, what you thought of the ending! (when you read it of course!) I liked lord of the rings, but when I read the book I skipped a LOT of the poems and life stories and songs that went on for pages and pages.. like jeebus stick to the STORY, LOL

plus, I want that blanket. AND, how cute are your fur babies. You can lean on them when you’re reading 😀

  19. I just started reading the Harry Potter books too. I have enjoyed all the movies and my friend who is a huge Harry Potter fan encouraged me to read the books. So I have set out on that adventure, I have only read the first one, but have the second and third in my To Be Read pile, which seems to be growing like my yarn stash. Good thing I can knit (stockinette) and read at the same time. I guess I had better find some simple patterns and get knitting and reading.

  20. Glad to hear you’re enjoying HP! Just wait until you get to the 6th and 7th books. I reread the last 100 pages of the 7th for the tenth time last night. SO GOOD!

  21. ahhh yes, the LOTR extended versions. a 6 cd set that I have permanently placed in my 7-dvd-changer dvd player. i love the extra scenes, especially the one where Eomer finds Eowyn on the battle field. gets me every time!

  22. I have the LOTR extended versions too – we’ve done a marathon weekend with them before at my house. Not back to back, but one on Friday, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday. I need to read the actual books someday.

I read Deathly Hallows, but now I want to go back and read all 7 from beginning to end. You know, when I find all sorts of magic time…

  23. Socially inept here….I have not read any of the Harry Potter Books, nor watched any LOTR. And I really really really try to only have one project going at a time. Right now I’m crocheting a comfort wrap for a specific recipient but it gets monotonous quickly, plus it’s just HUGE. So I have been punctuating it with other projects intended as Christmas gifts for friends. And I’ve been making tons of practice swatches to get the hang of this knitting thing…..I wanna knit like you do when I grow up.
