Now I Just Need to Knit It.

Yay! Boo! Yay! Boo! Yay!

Opportunity blossoms from disappointment, doesn’t it?

wrap1.JPG My friend Meg emailed me last week about this sweater that I knit last year. Like a lot of other people she asked how to get the pattern.

This used to be a free pattern on the Knit Picks site, but it is no longer available. Poof. Gone.

I offered Meg my copy, but she decided that she wouldn’t have time to knit it before the wedding, anyway. (She’s getting married next month, and she wanted to wear it on her wedding/honeymoon trip.)

482656367_4dfc58e027.jpg “Wait!”, I said. “I gave the yellow one to my sister, but I made a pink one that you can borrow!”

Wardrobe problem solved!

img_7017.JPG Right after I hit “send” on that email, I did this.

I had totally forgotten that I gave that pink sweater to my other sister, on my trip to Alaska in June.

No sweater for Meg. I hated the idea of messing up the bride’s wardrobe plans when the wedding is so close.

img_7004.JPG “Wait!”, I thought. “I have time to make Meg her own sweater, in any color she wants! As a wedding gift!”

Meg was very touched with this news (she’s a knitter, too), and she did all of the appropriate thanking and gushing. Aww.

See? Disappointment! Opportunity!

img_7022.JPG The yarn arrived last night. So far I’ve knit up a curly strip of stockinette. Knit Picks Shine is such a lovely yarn.

I have two weeks to turn this into a cute sweater.

It WILL happen.

Opportunity: free and plentiful low-cal treats!

  1. I’m seriously the luckiest lady. I still can’t believe you are doing this. It’s the nicest freaking thing anyone has done for me. You are such a ridiculously great friend.

And dude, seriously, no rush. I don’t leave until the 22nd of October and you don’t have to have up here on the 6th. Just show up for the party, that’s all I care about.

  2. What a pretty color of Shine. The sweater will be gorgeous in it! I LOVE the fact that dogs love ice cubes. It’s such a guilt free, cost free treat. Silly pups!

  3. I’m normally just in lurking mode, but I needed to tell you that I LOVE reading your posts. And, especially today (which happens to be a stressful day for me), I laughed out loud. You’re great. And I cannot wait to see how that sweater turns out. 🙂

  4. Only the two young-and-foolish dogs like ice. The older, smarter dogs realize that it’s just really cold water, and not worth the effort.

    🙂

  5. This post cracks me up and puts my day into perspective. The sweater is delightful! Lucky friend! Lucky sisters! Will you ever make one for yourself?

  6. You’re so sweet. Good thing, huh, so it could get you out of that faux pas! (I’m kidding. That’s such a sweet gesture, and what a great gift.)

Now for the knitting sisters who have that ugly tummy bulge which is accented by things that tie around them – I’d love to see this sweater longer, not with a tie, but tapered in at the waste with the lace detail at the bottom. Or maybe not at the bottom, but at the waiste it self. Love the sleeves. I have never varied from any pattern – too scared. If I could get my hands on this pattern, any suggestions on good general guidelines for altering patterns?

Keep the blog coming. You make me smile.

  7. I have to say I was a little shocked because I know where the pink one is and I LOVE IT!!! Let me know though if you don’t get finished I will let her borrow it–niceness must run in the family!! Also, to make a comment Malena had said she was worried about tummy bulge and this sweater–if anyone in the world has tummy bulge ITS ME, and I have to tell you that this sweater seems to hide it well. I don’t know if it is the pattern on the bottom or the tie but I still wear it and feel confident I don’t still look pregnant. Thanks again my sis!!

  8. Hmmm, I wonder what in the world would make them remove a nice free pattern that got them lots of attention? They must have just had way too many cute free patterns to put them ALL up. Seems like if it was free once, it should be free forever. Wonder if they would let you pdf it and share the love. Meg is very lucky. Extremely lovely gesture.

  9. That is the best wardrobe accessory AND wedding gift! You knit, girl! I love how you inspire me to do great things! Two weeks, yes, it will happen. Love the spewing of ice and the ones who caught it—mine would be my two toddlers who are always anxious for free ice!

  10. it’s such a beautiful sweater. and you’re such an awesome person. one, for making it for her. two, for getting it done in the time allowed.

    staci rules!

  11. Very cool sweater! I know I work better under a deadline so I’m sure you’ll get this one done just in time for the wedding.

I had to laugh at the ice cubes on the floor. The cats here think that ice cubes are just about the best toys in the world! What I hate is stepping in that little puddle of a former cube you missed in the clean up.

  12. Same thing happened to me with the leai wig pattern. It was free last year, but now it’s not and I threw my copy away after I had knitted it. I’ve got to start saving the patterns when I am done with them.

    I love the curly tails!

  13. That is a gorgeous sweater! No wonder you made it twice already… That’s great of you to knit one for your friend Meg. What a lovely present!

Good thing your pups know what to do with all that ice!
