My great-great aunt Ida used to knit up something to this for me and my sisters when we were kids. She was on to something – a little wool around your neck makes a huge difference in how warm you feel throughout the day. Cute, quick knit in bulky yarn with size 13 needles. Can be knit up in an afternoon, and will be keeping your neck warm by evening!
Even though this is is a quick-knit, there are a few tricky techniques that are clearly explained in the video tutorial.
Materials Needed:
• 70 yards of bulky yarn; or 100 yards of worsted, held double stranded
• Size 13 needles
• Tapestry needle

Hi Staci! I am knitting the “Ida Neck Wrap”, but I am needing help understanding what( work in pattern)means. I also feel like I have done something wrong on the Straight Section, when it says to (repeat between the *’s to end). It ends with ktbl on Row 1, instead of ending with p1. Am I doing something wrong, Staci? PLEASE HELP!! I would appreciate your help. I want to tell you that you are a very talented lady and that I HAVE learned so much from you. Thank you for the patterns and videos, they are very helpful.
Hi Staci! It’s me again. The part I need help understanding is the “DECREASE SECTION”. THANKS AGAIN!!
Hi Staci! SORRY you had trouble understanding what I was asking. I was needing help with all the DECREASE SECTION of this pattern (Ida Neck Wrap), everything else I understand. What does “work in patt as set” mean? I HOPE I wrote this to where you understand. I can talk it out better than I can writting it. THANK YOU for the fast response.
Hi Staci- Just an FYI…and this may be some temporary glitch elsewhere- but when I tried to open the link to closing the flaps on the Ida pattern, I got a YouTube error stating there was ‘malformed video content’ and it wouldn’t play.
It plays fine on your website here though. =)
Yeaaahhhh…think I will be making a few of these for friends- what a fun pattern!
Thanks and have a great weekend!
Quick question- what is the brand and colour of the varigated yarn you use in this video? It is calling to me…
Hi Staci! I was wondering… what is the pattern the mannequin is wearing?
What am i saying! I ment the scarf the mannequin was wearing on the lace scarf pattern! 😛
Hi, Staci,
Just purchased your Ida Scarf through PayPal. How do I access the pattern?
Anita
Hi, Staci,
Oops. I should have checked my email. I just found your pattern for the Ida Scarf in my email.
Thanks,
Anita
staci–first, let me tell you thank you for your great instructions while i am learning to knit–i have your website in my faves column and i am flying through sock yarn and loving it–never thought i would ever say that this time last year–i suggested that a friend look at your website and she loves it too– my question is this: last night i bought your pattern for aunt ida’s wrap and need some of that “dr suess simple” explaination–i can get down to the decrease section and cannot figure out, when it says to work in pattern to last 2 sts, what “the pattern” is–can you solve this mystery for me? i would appreciate it lynda
Staci – The Ida neck wrap calls for bulky yarn. I have Lion Brand Homespun and Lion Brand wool-ease thick & quick on hand. In your opinion, which would give me the best results.
It’s a real pleasure using your videos – thank you
Marilyn
love your instructions-u r an O:-).thanks.
I have purchased the Ida Neck Wrap pattern. Love it! I am down to the decrease section. I don’t understand row 2 that states work in pattern as set. Is this the straight section repeated again?
Staci, as I have read other comments I see others are also not understanding rows 1 & 2 in the decrease section. Not sure what “work in pattern as set” means. I see that where this ends we need to end with 11 stitches from the 15.
Thanks for your help.
Hi Marilyn – whenever a pattern tells you to “work in pattern”, it means to continue to knit the knits and purl the purls. In this case, it means to ktbl the ktbl stitches, and purl the purl stitches. It is written this way because as you decrease, the first stitch is going to be different on Row 2 each time you repeat it (due to the decreases). Row 2 gives instructions for one row only – not the entire straight section again.
Hope that helps!

Staci, I am confued after straight section and come to decrease. What does it mean to work in pattern thank you
Mary – working “in pattern” means to continue the rib as you have established it in the work so far. So you will want to knit the knits and purl the purls, as you have up to that point.

Staci, I just want you to know you have beautiful hands! Not only that, your videos are super. I am the type of person that is very literal and think all written directions have errors in them as I do not interpret them correctly. It is really nice to be shown the way through the patterns in a very concise way….Thank you, I look forward to opening your website every morning. Patty
Staci, I am a lover of dogs as well. Did you get my last post about four lovely hands. I am not sure I did it correctly…Patty
Thank you so much
Hi Staci, in the Ida Neck Wrap in the decrease section row 1 I end up with 1 stitch instead of 2 – with a ssk at the beginning of the row I end up with 1 stitch left (I started with 15 stitches) – not sure where I have gone wrong. Appreciate your help. Gisella
Gisella – I’m not sure what to tell you…the count in the pattern is correct. Perhaps you either dropped a stitch somewhere, or worked an extra decrease? Regardless, you can probably get away with just breaking the yarn and fastening off. I’m sure it will look okay!

In the Decrease section,Row 1 and 2: work in pattern, is that ssk and then repeat row 1 of the strait section. Then row 2 is repeat row 2 of the strait section?
Thanks
Stephanie – “working in pattern” means to knit the knits and purl the purls as you see them…no decreases or increases.
Oh, I think I’ve got it now, when you see a K on your needle your working with, you k it, see a p, p it?
I made mine, it only took me a few hours to make and I’m a slow knitter. I love it, I used double strands of Caron Simply Soft Party Yarn – Platinum Sparkle, so comfortable & warm & So Pretty! Plus the decrease section was not hard to figure out at all, you just get it as you go along. 🙂
I have the same concern as Gisella. Started row 1 of decrease section with 15 stitches, ssk uses 2 stitches each time leaving only 1 to k2tog. Doesn’t make sense. Very frustrating. What else can I do with the lone stitch? Maybe just knit it? This part isn’t shown in your video tutorial. Thank you.
Hi Deb – did you see my reply to Gisella? The count in the pattern is correct. (Decreasing 2 stitches every row, starting with an odd number of stitches, will eventually leave you with an odd number (3) stitches.) Perhaps you either dropped a stitch somewhere, or worked an extra decrease? Regardless, you can get away with just breaking the yarn and fastening off once you’re down to 1 stitch.

About blocking, do I went block it or steam block & is pinning the scarf down necessary since it is rib stitched?
Stephanie – no, no need to pin it out when it’s wet and drying. It should hold it’s shape just fine.

Staci, thank you for the well done teaching videos. Am doing my first hat with your video.
Would like to do Ida neck wraps as a project. Could you make this pattern available on Amazon? Thank you, Sue Morse
Staci, this Ida Neck Wrap was fun and quick to knit! I learned a new technique knitting the tuck flap and felt so accomplished when it turned out perfectly. It always helps me
to read the comment section before starting a new pattern. You are amazing at clearly explaining the execution of a technique or pattern reading. You have immensely helped me to be a more confident knitter! I am a knitting addict ????
Could you give me the name of your double needles? I want to buy the good ones . Thanks.
