How Should I Slip This Stitch?

Your pattern tells you to slip the next stitch – but how? Knit-wise? Purl-wise? With yarn in front or back? In this video we talk about what the “default” is, and all the different ways of slipping stitches.

The sweater on the mannequin is my Woman’s Zippered Letterman’s Jacket, pattern + video tutorial.

The pattern for the sweater I’m wearing can be found here (not my design).

The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Lion Brand Hometown USA.

The needles I used for demonstration are by Clover.

The nail polish I’m wearing is Julep color “Flora”.

  1. My pattern says to slip first stitch then K4, P4 across the row. How would I do this, slip purl wise with yarn in back? Pattern does not specify how. What do you recommend?

  2. Lisa – if it is the right side of the work, then slip purl-wise with the yarn in back. If it is the wrong side of the work, slip purl-wise with the yarn in front.

  3. Thanks so much for your help! You’re the best! I just started to knit about a year ago. I always visit your videos any time I am lost, stuck or confused ( which is often)! You have helped me so much. Thank you for all that you do to help us! I would be lost without you!

  4. My pattern doesn’t specify to slip the stitch purl wise or knit wise so does that mean I would do it purlwise? Pattern reads: K1, sl1wyif and repeat.

  5. I’m making the Des Marais shawl.
The beginning of the row is: Sl 1 purlwise, k7 (makes 9 stitches total).
I get only 8 st when I do this.
How do you do this to get the extra stitch??
    Help!! Thanks,
    Swati

  6. Swati – you are correct, those instructions only total 8 stitches. I suggest contacting the pattern designer (Ravelry is a good way to do that), and asking where the extra stitch is supposed to come from!
