Stripes and solids, no wrong side, no seam! The Sixes and Threes Cowl is a free pattern and three-part video tutorial.
This pattern is a FREE RAVELRY DOWNLOAD.
Size: (after grafting) 25” long by 5.5” wide (before grafting, “scarf” is 50” long)
Needles: Size 4 US (3.5mm) 16” circs and size 4 US (3.5mm) set of DPNs, crochet hook size G or H
Yarn: Three 50 gram hanks of any fingering weight yarn, in three colors. I used Louet Gems Fingering, (this yarn has been discontinued). A good substitute for Gems is Knit Picks Stroll sock yarn, but any fingering weight yarn will work.
Additional Materials: tapestry needle for grafting, a few feet of scrap worsted-weight yarn
Gauge: 6.5 sts per inch, 8 rows per inch
Colors I used of Louet Gems Fingering
Lighter-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Cream, Steel Gray, and Seafoam Green
Darker-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Goldenrod, Burgundy, and Pewter
Instructions for Working Three-Color Swatch
(Before starting swatch, name each color – “Color 1”, “Color 2”, and “Color 3”. It won’t make a difference which is which, they are used and striped with each other. Remember these color names, because they are referenced in the cowl pattern.)
Using Color 1, CO 30 stitches.
Knit 9 rows (5 ridges).
Row 1 (RS): K across all stitches
Row 2: K 5, P 20, K 5
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more (4 rows total), then switch to Color 2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 7 times (14 rows total), then switch to Color 3.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice (4 rows total), then knit 10 rows (5 ridges).
BO on RS.
Information on things you’ll see in this video:
The 16″ circular needles I use in the video are by Knitter’s Pride, I use both Novas (metal) and Dreamz (wood).
The crochet hook I use is from a Waves set by Knitter’s Pride.
The ball-chain stitch markers I use are from a seller on Etsy who no longer has a shop, but similar markers can be found here.
The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.
The striped sweater I’m wearing is store-bought. 🙂
The nail polish I’m wearing is by Julep, color “Lupita”.
Hi Staci! Love this pattern and just finished it…well, most of it. I was doing the Kitchener stitch and someone I got mixed up with the DPN (somewhat like Carole). Is there a “safe” way to undo the Kitchener stitch so I don’t have to rip out and risk loosing a stitch when putting them on the needles? I know how to tink but not sure how to undo the Kitchener stitch. Help!
Thanks so much for your great videos – I’ve learned so much from them.
Glynda – there is no secret to undoing the Kitchener stitch…just stitch-by-stitch, the same way you created it, picking up each newly released stitch on a needle as soon as it’s there. Good luck!

Is there any way to buy this pattern without the yarn purchase? Louet would sell many copies if they lifted this requirement.
Thanks so much Staci! I finished it – just need to block it. Already purchased more yarn to make myself one as the first one is a gift. Love it!
Hi Staci, I know it doesn’t really go with the pattern but is there a way you can measure how long the solid knitting is before starting the stripes? Thanks!
Rebecca – the length of the stripes isn’t what is important, it’s the number of rows! The pattern is carefully written to use up all of the three hanks of yarn, without running out.

So bummed! I put my order in with louet for the yarn, then received a second email that the shipping was actually going to cost me $40 to Canada! That’s ridiculous, it would cost me over $100 Canadian to make this cowl. I was really looking forward to it too 🙁
Dana – I just got this answer from Louet regarding shipping charges to Canada – “Actually, the shipping will not cost you $40. Canadian shipping is a flat $10. I know that your confirmation will say $40 since in is a USD based site and a Canadian order is considered international. Since we have two shipping locations, one in the USA and one in Canada, we can edit the shipping at the time of shipping. Unfortunately, the website has no mechanism to convey this to you.”
Thanks for bringing this up – now other Canadians will know about the flat $10 shipping rate, too.

Staci you are awesome! Just got an email from Louet explaining the shipping confusion. I’m going to place another order and can’t wait to get started on my cowl!
Hi Staci: Looking forward to doing Sixes & Threes Cowl in school colors to wear at my grandchildrens games. FUN!!!
When you do the provisional cast on, the yarn you are using to do your chain is it
the same weight yarn as your project or bigger? Thanks. Donna
Donna – I use worsted weight yarn, it works fine, and it’s easier to work with in a provisional CO than DK weight.

hi
my name is Sigrún and I live in Iceland. is there any way to purchase the pattern without buying the yarn? I live in Iceland and it is very expensive for me to have it sent to me.
best wishes Sigrún
Hi Staci!
I am curious – why the name Sixes and Threes?
Jill :o)
Hi Staci,
Quick question, I’ve just started knitting this beautiful scarf and it is curling on the circulars, will it even out and stop curling? When I’m knitting other items in the round I do not have this type of curling, do you think I’ve set the provisional cast up wrong?
Thank you for your help,
Amy Ostafy
Amy – regardless of how it is curling now, it will have no choice but to stop curling once it’s finished and seamed.

Hello Staci
I’m posting this comment here because the trick I would you to explain would be pretty similar to what you do to correct the jogs in the stripes. Could you make a video explaining how we can get rid of the jog when knitting garter stitch in the round ? I think there is a method developed by Judy Graham and I think the other knitters following your videos like me could enjoy this trick !
Thank you very much.
Best wishes
Aline
Hi Staci!
Thanks for this video, with all these useful tips! I can’t order the yarn you used (living in the EU – shipping costs are quite normal but make the final price of the cowl too high), but your explanations are as they usually are, ie crystal clear, so I’ll substitute with something I have in my stash and start casting on as soon as I finish typing this.
But I’m as curious as Jill (posted on Feb. 23) – as to where the name of the cowl comes from. Any clue for us please? 🙂
Hi Staci! Thank you for the wonderful pattern and instruction video! After knitting my swatch I had to go down to a size 3 needle. However I am finding the stitches are really stretched out on my 16″ circulars. Any advice?
Hi Staci! Thank you for the wonderful pattern and instruction video! After knitting my swatch I had to go down to a size 3 needle. However I am finding the stitches are really stretched out on my 16″ circulars. Any advice??
Melanie – it is normal for the first row or two (or three) to be tight around the circulars. Once you get away from the CO row, things will loosen up. If you’re really having a tough time, you can use the magic loop method to get you through the first few rounds: https://verypink.com/2012/10/17/simple-magic-loop/
S t a c i
Hi Staci!!! Thank you for the link to the magic loop method. I should have mentioned in my original post that I was on round 50 🙂 I will continue the magic loop on my 16″ circulars for the rest of my project. Just wanted to say how much your website and You Tube channel mean to me! I did not start knitting until last year, and I watch your videos and enjoy knitting daily now! Thank you for helping me to discover my passion for knitting!
Hi Staci, I am ready to start on the cowl. Can I use the crochet cast-on where you cast on directly to the needle, rather than the crochet chain method? Is there anything I should be aware of if I use this method? Thanks!
Kim – I haven’t test knit this using any other provisional cast-on, and I prefer the crocheted cast-on because it always keeps the stitches neat and with really good tension. If you are familiar and comfortable with another provisional cast-on, I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t work – it’s up to you.

Hi! I love your videos and have learned how to knit with a big thanks to you!
My problem concerns the sixes and threes cowl pattern. I live in Finland and am not sure if the Louet have importers for their yarns here at all. The delivery fees from USA to here are often horrible. How could i purchase the pattern without making the order for yarns in this situation? (If they do bring their yarns to Finland, i would naturally buy them for the pattern).
I would really love to make the cowl as a gift for my love.
Yours
Arna
Arna – I believe the pattern is only available with yarn purchase. Louet is distributing the pattern, I am not. You will need to contact Louet (they have an office in the Netherlands) to ask them about getting yarn and the pattern in Finland.
S t a c i
Hi Stacy,
Would it be possible to make a provisional cast on using a long cord from an interchangeable needle set? It seems it would be easier to retrieve stitches later.
Thanks! Kathy
Dumb question. I L-O-V-E this pattern is there anyway to get the pattern (even pay for it) without purchasing the yarn? I am highly allergic to wool and would like to use an acrylic
Thanks!!!
Lauren – you may want to contact Louet directly with your question, they are distributing the pattern, and they may be able to suggest a non-wool yarn.
S t a c i
Staci,
thank you for the fast response!
I’ll contact then
Hi Staci,
Big fan! I’m a beginner so the pattern may have made sense to more advanced knitters. As for me, I’m still confuse on which stitches you’ve used. Your video said knit but is it garter, stockinette stitches. Knitting all rows just don’t look the same as your final cowl. The pattern from Louet has instructions for the swatch, the provisional cast on, and after that it says to work 66 rounds in color 1, without further information on the type of stitches to work on. The next is the striped sections. Do I follow the same pattern as the three color swatch? The video links are not working so I’m still watching the video from your site but it doesn’t cover the patterns. So I’m confused. Am I missing a page from the pattern? It’s only 2 pages, double side print. Please help!
Christine – I would say this pattern is appropriate for “advanced beginner” knitters. Every stitch in the cowl is a knit stitch.

Hi Staci.
Just a question around the swatch. I had 5.5 in the instructions but I will follow what you mentioned earlier on.
I have to increase my needle size to probably 4 to get the correct gauge. Do I have wet and block my swatch again?
Cheers!
Ananta
Sorry I should have been clear. I’ve already done my first swatch and will have to increase needle size. So do I have to wet and block my swatch again after needle change?
Cheers!
A
Anata – yes. The only way to know what your gauge will be after washing is to wash the swatch.

thanks Staci!
Staci,
I really like the idea of a tube cowl/scarf and want to make the pattern for my son. How can I make this pattern into a tube SCARF instead of a cowl. He lives in the wilds of Alaska and needs something warm which makes the double layer is desired.
What is your recommendation for closing the ends of the tube but not joining the ends together?
Thank you for any ideas you’d be willing to share!
Lisa – you can just knit it with a normal cast-on and bind-off, then seam the ends closed. There are plenty of decorative seams out there (I’m not much for sewing), but I’d probably just use a decorative whip stitch.

Hello, is the yarn able to be bought from outside of the USA? I’m in New Zealand.
Rachel – you can contact Louet directly with your question:

Every time I see the Dark one (the one with Goldenrod, Burgundy, and Pewter), I can’t help but think GRYFFINDOR!! (Makes me want to knit one so much!! Might give it a try soon)
Great tutorial, and thank you for all your videos! 🙂
Happy and magical knitting for everyone! ;D
Has the promotional offer ended? I just tried to buy it, but when I entered the coupon code it said the promotional code VERYPINK is not a valid code or has expired. I know I have the right yarn (three hanks of Gems fingering weight yarn…
Skye – I suggest contacting Louet directly, they have very good customer service. Here is a link to their “contact us” page:

Hi Stacy. I love all your patterns and your teaching is the best bar none. I just finished the gold and maroon stripes in the sixes and Three’s and Oh my gosh. I have about 3 inches of the gold left. You were not kidding when you laughed and said you had used almost every bit of yarn… I love it so far. . thanks for all the terrific films you make too. Sincerely Lynne
Hello.I loved your video so clear and I will try to make this cowl.
When you said knit 9 rows (5 ridges). What is ridges?
On your instruction/pattern, you k5 p20 k5. When I look at your knitting I did not see the purl knitting on your cowl at all. Did I interpret ur pattern wrongly? Mine has some purl knitting and it feels thicker
Nick – there is no purling in the cowl itself. I think the instructions you’re looking at are for knitting the swatch.

I am not sure what I have done wrong but when I was doing my kitchener sittch, my scarf ended up twisted and was a mess at the end 🙁
Nicholast – sorry you’re having trouble. A twist in the scarf can be a good thing, and can add drape. But if you’re unhappy with it, you can undo the kitchener stitch and redo it. Set the scarf out in front of you, and while following one column of stitches, make sure that the scarf is not twisted, and that the beginning of the rounds (at each end of the scarf) are lining up.

Sorry to tell everyone, but the factory that makes the Louet Gem Fingering wool burned down and now they have very little inventory for sale. And you still need to buy three hanks of wool to get the pattern. I also got the message that the VERYPINK code had expired, but will try contacting them at the web address listed above.
