Arrowhead Poncho

This pattern and yarn kit from Kraemer Yarns is deceptively simple – it’s just two rectangles! Knit in bulky yarn, it’s a quick project that is also good for knitters who want to give cables a try for the first time. You can see the video tutorial below.

Sizes: Two sizes, small and large
Needles: Size US 10.5 (6.5mm).
Yarn: Kraemer Yarns Mauch Chunky, available in the Arrowhead Poncho kit
Additional Materials: 2 ring stitch markers, cable needle, tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends
Gauge: 14 stitches and 18 rows = 4″ (10cm)

The Arrowhead Poncho yarn kit is available here. (If you don’t see the color you’re after, it is currently out of stock. Please contact Kraemer Yarns for more info.)
You can add Arrowhead Poncho to your Ravelry queue here.
You can see all of the Mauch Chunky yarn colors here.

To help determine size:
The smaller size is 26″ (66cm) long, measured from the center/bottom of the v-neck, straight down to the bottom of the front point.
The larger size is 28″ (71cm) long, measured from the center/bottom of the v-neck, straight down to the bottom of the front point.

The colors of yarn in the video are:
Purple (my poncho) is knit in Eggplant.
The grayish yarn is Blueberry Ice.
The tan color is Sandstone.
The bright pink in the swatch is Raspberry.

The needles I’m using are Knitter’s Pride Ginger from an interchangeable set. The cable needle is by Brittany.

  1. Could not resist this Kit! Great find I’m all about ponchos, so comfy and warm. Just what I need to make after finishing up my husband’s pullover sweater I am designing for him.

Staci, your tutorials are always the best! I appreciate you so much. Do you remember over 10 years ago I told you when “I grew up” I wanted to be an “amazing knitter like you”? Well thanks to your tutorials I have indeed grown to be an amazing knitter! Thank you as knitting brings me such joy and calm.

  2. I have a question about swatching. Why is only the knit/purl section included in the swatch measure and not the cables? When I knit, I am usually pretty close to guage for simple stiches, but add in a yarnover or a little fancy stich and I always have to change needles.

I have learned so much from your videos! I even watch some of your slo motion series so I can try to unlearn some bad habits.

    • Monica – the gauge is measured in only knit and purl stitches, because it was initially measured in only knit and purl stitches to get the gauge for the pattern. The cable is not part of what is measured for the gauge.

  3. Ah ok. I have noticed that if I have an all over pattern, my guage stays about the same throughout. Thanks for your help!

  4. When on the Kraemer website I noted that they list the sizes as 28 and 32. The photo shows a pretty short version with only 6 rows of knit and yours is 8. I am short but I want a longer shawl. I am not sure how much yarn to buy…are 8 rows the 28″ or 32″ version?
Love your videos! You have helped me be a much better knitter! Thanks

    • Melanie – I would contact Kraemer with your questions…the information about sizing that I give here on my website is exactly what you will get if you knit the pattern as written, in the correct gauge.
