Shadow Checkerboard Baby Blanket

In this video I demonstrate the shadow/illusion knitting in the Shadow Checkerboard Baby Blanket, sponsored by Kraemer Yarns.

Get your free pattern here on Ravelry, add it to your queue!

The yarn for this blanket (over 70 colors!) can be found here.
The colors I used in my blanket and samples are: Sprout & Buttercream, Turquoise & Buttercream, Bloom & Rouge.

Techniques I use in this tutorial –
Long-Tail Cast-On
Weaving Ends in Garter Stitch

Yes, there is a blooper at 19:04 in the video that my producer left in to be funny. “Shah, shah.”

The cowl on the mannequin is Color My Cowl, free pattern and video tutorial.

  1. Hi,
I love your tutorials. They are so helpful! I would love to get tge free checkerboard baby blanket pattern but I closed my Ravelry account. Is there any other site that might have this free pattern?

    • Janette if you click on the pattern it takes you directly to the Kraemer web site and the free pattern. You go through the steps as if to order something and they send it to you.

  2. This is so beautiful! I can’t wait to start it. Since you’re using contrasting colors, should you test the yarn to be sure the colors didnt bleed? Does this particular yarn bleed colors?

  3. Thank you, Staci! I love, love, love this pattern and your tutorials (and your nails ?). I actually started a baby blanket using a Debbi Bliss pattern which I now want to adapt to accommodate this shadow knitting technique.

I’ve only knit 32 rows of the first pattern which will serve as a lacy edge. But as I have cast on 182 stitches (30 more than in Clara M’s checkerboard pattern), I will have eight sections of 23 stitches instead of eight sections of 19. I’ll just have to add an increase of 2 stitches to make it 184 across (184/ 23=8). ??

  4. Incidentally, those are not supposed to be question marks but emojis in my comment above. ‘Nail polish’ emoji and ‘yarn’ emoji. Oh, well.

  5. Ive done everything we’re supposed to do but still cannot get the pattern. Never get confirmation email from Kraemer.

  6. Hello Staci, could you please tell me what colors you used for the blanket? You say “cream and green’ in the video but could you please tell me the full names? And also what are the colors used in the next sample you show (the blue and yellow)? Thanks for the info. Can’t wait to start this project!

  7. I have some questions, forgive me if answered previously in a similar thread.
I noticed that some of the combinations really stood out while others got lost in the pattern, Is there a way to see how the colors work together before deciding on the final combination? I like a lot of contrast so I can see what I am doing, but one color seems to always swallow the other. I love this pattern and might try it for a blanket for our camper, which brings me to the next question: would using a bigger gauge needle alter the pattern? I also would like to know if holding the yarn double is a possibility to make the knit more dense. I simply love your tutorials and look for ward to your posts!

    • Monica – any light/dark or high contrast color combo will work well…the checkerboard pattern stands out in all of my samples.  If they didn’t show up very well, it was the way I was holding it (or not holding it) or the camera.  A bigger gauge would require a thicker yarn, but the pattern should still show up.  I haven’t test illusion knitting in different gauges – but my guess is that it will work provided the fabric is dense enough, and not lacy. (Naturally, I recommend using the Kraemer Yarn suggested in the pattern – it’s a great yarn, and they are the ones that sponsored this free pattern and free video tutorial.)

  8. I’m having issues getting the pattern. I cant even load the website and I’ve tried numerous browsers.

    • Sorry you’re having trouble – the website might be down (lots of brutal weather in the US right now).  You can contact Kraemer directly for help.S t a c i

  9. Hi Staci, thank you for your wonderful tutorial! I have started this project and I am enjoying it so much ?. However, I have noticed that the bottom has started to curl and it’s kind of annoying. Is there something wrong with my tension or needle size? What can I do to stop it from curling? Thanks! Eunice

    • Eunice – If you are using the yarn recommended, and your gauge is correct, it will flatten out. You can even apply some steam (from an iron) to flatten it out while you’re still working on it.
