  1. I unknit a sweater and wound the balls as I did this. The balls are tightly wound and I would like to rewind them (great video and very clear explanation).
My question – this yarn needs to be washed. What would be your recommendations for this to be done and how would you wash it?
This was a sweater that I previously knit and was worn by my Dad. BTW – I do not own a swift.
    TIA

  2. This was an amazingly helpful video. Thanks!!!! Plus, I never knew that about the direction of the writing on the label so as to know which yarn to start with, the outside or the center. I can’t wait to tell my daily crocheting friend 😀 I’m bummed that I wound a couple of hanks of expensive yarn, Malabrigo Mecha and about 2 years ago thinking I had a pattern for it and it turned out my guage was off so I didn’t do it and it’s been sitting here ever since 🙁 I also did that with quite a few of my Cloudborn Pima Cotton DK 🙁

  3. Very clear, but I do have a question.
If you know you’ll be doing an entire project at your craft spot, couldn’t you knit right from swift?

    • Yes – if you have the space to keep the swift open for an entire project and you know you’re only going to knit in that spot, I don’t see a problem with knitting right from the swift.

  4. You give such good information. I really appreciate it. Whenever I am stumped on something I see if you have a video about it. When I first started knitting I was so confused about magic loop. I did a search on the Internet and watched several videos but it didn’t get through my head until I watched your video. I haven’t used magic loop since last fall when I made two sweaters and just finished my third today. You explained it so well I didn’t even have to go back to do a refresher! So thank you thank you thank you. When I get up the nerve I’d like to try to knit my first pair of socks after watching your videos that is!

  5. wow… knitting from the swift, interesting!!!!
stacie… i love your videos because you EXPLAIN AND DEMO EVERY LITTLE STEP!!!!!! thank you??

  6. i have an odd situation!! i’ve been knitting 15+ years, inter. level BUT… everyone i know casts on with lightning speed!!! i must have learned wrong!!! i reset with every single cast or else it grows and grows!!!HELP!!

  7. Staci,

Thanks for that very helpful Q&A session! I have a few questions that were not addressed, so here goes . . .

    1) What is the theory behind this double-winding? For instance, does it have to do with the twist of the yarn (S-twist vs. Z-twist)? I read somewhere that one type of yarn you want to pull from the center of a cake and the other from the outside, so that you don’t either loosen or tighten the yarn’s twist in the process of pulling it off the cake to knit with it. Is there something to that?

    2) When pulling yarn from the swift for the first winding, does it make any difference whether the swift is turning clockwise or counterclockwise? Again, do you want to do it one direction for S-twist yarns and the opposite direction for Z-twist? Or do yarn twist and swift-turning direction really not matter?

    3) Finally: My normal practice — at least before watching this video — was to wind once from the swift to the ball-winder, then, after slipping the cake off the ball winder, to “squish” the cake gently inward by squeezing it a bit with my hands, so that the yarn relaxes somewhat by filling in the space that the ball-winder’s core had occupied. Is doing this alone not enough to allow the yarn to fully relax?

That’s all I have. Thanks in advance if you have time to address these other questions!
