  1. Yes cone yarns can be very tightly wound ie a bulky comes off as worsted or thinner. I experienced this with Pam powers knits projects, where one color of wool was only available in a cone; knitting straight off the cone in a colorwork hat resulted in a noticeable difference. I completed the item and soaked well before blocking. The cone yarn did bloom a bit, but not like it would have if I’d wound from cone into a skein first to allow the yarn to breathe a bit — maybe even soak that skein in water and let it relax a bit before winding into a cake and knitting. I loved all the yarns and had a wonderful experience making up that pattern— customer service was excellent as well.

  2. Hi Staci and Polly,

About getting good tension in color work — in a previous episode of this podcast, there was a similar question that was answered by a listener. The suggestion was essentially —

    Turn the work inside-out.
Pretend that you are working in the round, so you see an oval of active stitches on the circular needle with the right side on the farther side of the oval.
Knit on the right side of the work (i.e., what is farthest from you).
This will force you to make the floats longer.

    2. now the part you are working on is

  3. Can you post name of the German Fair Isle, please? It sounds like it is basically self-striping yarn, no?
