Fancy Stitch Combos – Feather and Fan

Note – there are several ways of working this stitch combo – this is just one of them. But they’re all based on the same idea to create the “roller coaster” effect.

Instructions for working the Feather and Fan stitch:
Cast-on a multiple of 18 stitches.
Setup Row: Purl all stitches
Row 1 (RS): *k2tog 3 times, (K1, yo) 6 times, k2tog 3 times*, repeat between *s to end of row
Rows 2 and 3: Knit across all stitches
Row 4: Purl across all stitches
Repeat these 4 rows to desired length, bind-off on Row 2.

Instructions for working this stitch in-the-round:
Cast-on a multiple of 18 stitches.
Round 1: *k2tog 3 times, (K1, yo) 6 times, k2tog 3 times*, repeat between *s to end of row
Round 2: Purl across all stitches
Round 3: Knit across all stitches
Round 4: Knit across all stitches
Repeat these 4 rows to desired length, bind-off purlwise on Row 2.

If you want to work stripes as I did, change color after Row 2 (working Row 3 in new color).

This week is the fifth video in a new series called Fancy Stitch Combos. In this series I hope to demonstrate stitches that have been requested, and hopefully introduce you to some new ones that I think are pretty and useful. Feel free to drop me a note if you’d like to submit an idea for a video in this series.

Information on things you’ll see in this video:

The sweater I’m wearing is my Ombre Dyed Sweater, pattern + video tutorial.

The scarf on the mannequin is One Row Handspun Scarf, knit with Cascade 220.

The bulky yarn I used in the sample is Berroco Peruvia Quick.

The DK weight yarn that I used in the pink and yellow sample is Madeline Tosh, Tosh Merino DK.

The wood needles I use for demonstration are by Clover, size 10.5 (6.5mm).

  1. Love this pattern and love the way you teach. I was wondering if you can suggest a pattern using this stitch pattern using sock weight yarn and small needles.
Thank you again for all your wonderful videos.
    Martha

  2. I just finished knitting your spiral scarf and it came out looking wonderful. I plan to knit a feather and fan one next. I’ve always loved this stitch and it never fails to amaze me that something this simply can produce such a pretty effect.

  3. Hi Lisa – whoops, I forgot to add that to the video description. If you want to work stripes as I did, change color after Row 2 (working Row 3 in new color).

  4. Hi Martha – I don’t know a pattern off the top of my head that uses this stitch in sock weight yarn, but I’m sure you can find one on Ravelry!

  5. Hi Staci,
It seems that I lose one stitch after I knit the first row of this pattern, I go from 18 stitches to 17. Not sure what I’m doing wrong, can you help? Thanks,
    Kathy

  6. Hi Kathy – you’re losing a stitch somewhere, but I can’t tell you where without looking at your work. If you’re following the directions carefully (no distractions!), you should end up with 18 stitches, every row.

  8. Thanks for showing these fancy stitch combos. Some times watching a short video of how to work the pattern helps. Do you have any videos about how to change the color of the yarn and what to do with the tails.

  9. Oi Stacy! Thank you for learning this stitch. A long time ago i want to make a scarf with this stitch…but i don’t understand how to do… now i understood. is wonderfull. thanks.

  11. I knew if I wanted to know how to convert my single needle pattern into “in the round” YOU’D have it!
    THANK YOU!

  12. Staci, when you bind off on row 2 do you use a regular knit bind off or some other stretchy bind off?

    Thanks,

    Tina

  13. Tina – regular bind-off, unless you’re using this stitch for the cuffs of socks or something else that requires a stretchy bind-off.

  14. Hi. Thank you very much for ALL of your tutorials. And thank you SO much for converting this to in-the-round! I have a question about changing the colors for this stitch. You said to do it after Row 2. Does that mean you do R1 and 2 in color A and R3 AND 4 in color B and then keep repeating? You had only mentioned doing R3 in color B, so I am a little confused.

  15. Candy – yes, change color after Row 2 (working Row 3 in new color). I changed color every two rows. Rows 1 and 2 in one color, Rows 3 and 4 in the second color.

  16. Help..,please.I keep losing stitches after the purl side what am I doing wrong? I used a multiple of 4 together by 4 y/o with the 2 initial and 2 at the end.

  17. Gloria – the pattern calls for a multiple of 18 stitches…the stitch won’t work properly without at least 18 stitches.

  18. When making a blanket with this stitch, is there actually 6 stitches knitted together between the “fans”. I know y ou start with 3 together, then 6 with a wool over, but then is it just 3 knit togethers or actually 6. Does the repeat start and end with the knit together.

  19. Val – the six stitches knitted together is equal to 3 k2togs, since it takes two stitches for one k2tog stitch. Trust the pattern – it works!

In the instructions, I’ve used an asterisk at the beginning and end of the pattern repeat, to make it clear.

    Hope that helps!

  20. Hi Staci,

I’m new to knitting. I’ve done this pattern in a scarf. I’m almost finished, getting ready to bind off. When you say bind of on row 2, does that mean to knit row 1 and then bind off or does it mean to knit rows 1 and 2 and then bind off?

Thanks in advance for your help…
