Try to Remain Calm

Ready to blast off into a fast-topic-changing Friday? Well, ready or not…

sweater2.jpg I’ve been a little nervous lately. I was nearing completion on my current knitting project, and I had no idea what to knit next.

After a few days of searching high and low for something good, my next project idea came in the mail.

Cute, right?

The shocking thing is…

img_6615.JPG …that it came from this magazine.

I know that people find nice things to knit within the pages of Cast On, but I usually flip through for a good belly laugh.

After all, it oftentimes provides us with gems like this:

pink.jpg Yeah.

img_6635.JPG I am reading the most delightful book. It is Better Than Beauty, A Guide to Charm, first published in 1938. Much of the information is timeless, while other stuff is more like this:

Hair, like any other part of your body, should be washed when it is dirty. If you live in an industrial center where coal dust rules the waves, your hair needs laundering once or twice a week.

These are the Go With the Flow Socks from Interweave’s Favorite Socks book. I’m using Araucania sock yarn.

This is also the maiden voyage for my new Knit Picks DPNs. Wow. These needles are fab.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Absolutely GREAT picture of Abe with the “commentary”. The sweater is cute and understandably a surprise given the pink and white number but is that a curtain tie back around the waist? Have a great weekend yourself also!

  2. Yes, that might be a curtain tie-back around her waist. I think I’ll skip that part, as well as the skin tight pants. It is Cast On, after all.

  3. Love the new sweater project but the pants!$?!?! What are those? I think they belong in the poop cup.

I love the charm book advice. Who knew that you would especially need to launder the hair where coal dust rules the waves?

    Abe’s a ham.

  4. I definitely find your posts about your knitting very interesting and like your comments, but nothing cracks a smile and or makes me laugh at your dog photos and your comments with them! Thanks for the great blog. Back to you Abe!
BTW, I love your sock yarn!

  5. I love how abe’s nails always look like they are painted 🙂

And that thing around the girls’ waist is totally a curtain tie-back; my mom has the same thing on her upstairs curtains, but they are gold lol

  6. I ditto the pants and “belt” comments. Don’t think I’ve ever perused Cast On before — looks like it could be entertaining! Love Abe 😉

  7. That’s a beautiful sweater. I definitely never would have seen it. I think I’ve glanced through Cast On a few times at the bookstore and then promptly put it back on the shelf.

  8. I love the sweater and the pink outfit is a classic “What were they thinking?” I didn’t know that there was a knitting magazine that doubled as a joke book.

Old advice books are a great source of humor. I have one from the ’20s called the Servantless Household. It recommends doing dishes only once a day and getting a large truck to put your dirty dishes in until you’re ready to wash them.

  9. Pfffbbffft! right back at ‘cha Abe

So are you one of those that don’t consider sock yarn stash? I love the knit pick’s needles, but I use the circ’s since I’ve become a magic loop lover.

Please be careful though, these things are sharp and I would hate to see what happens when someone sits on ’em!

  10. Your comments about Cast On made me giggle. After joining TKGA, I was excited about getting the magazine, but I haven’t been compelled to knit ANYTHING in any issue. In fact, some of the patterns make me think of the projects posted on this blog: http://youknitwhat.blogspot.com/. If you haven’t ever checked it out, you’ll get a good laugh.

I finished the baby blanket from Blue Sky Alpacas and posted photos on my blog. I hope you’ll check it out and let me know what you think. I just started knitting Argosy and am having a lot of fun with the pattern (and Noro Silk Garden is easy to knit with!).

I hope you’re doing well. Any news on Molly Renee?

  11. On my. As soon as I hit the words “Cast On” (the photos were taking a long time to load), I thought “Isn’t that the magazine with that hideous pink outfit in it?”

Then, like magic, the photo appeared and I almost snorted. I still remember Mike & I sitting in B&N and mocking every single thing in that issue. I’ll have to go and see if they have the current issue in stock, as it looks like there are hopefuls in it!

  12. No Molly Renee yet. My sister was in contractions all day yesterday, then nothing. I talked with her today, and she’s actually making light of the situation now. I got her to stop swearing and laugh, at least. haha

  13. Wow the first sweater is so nice, but the one below yuck, I have seen these in my aunts magazines, and I always wonder do people actually wear these things??
And Abe is cute as always.

  14. Staci, I tried to launder my hair after reading the helpful hint that you posted, but I’m a little confused… how do I get the door of my front-loader closed when I have my head inside? Would Tide work better than Cheer? Do you recommend fabric softener? Please help!

  15. I was just introduced to you by an online pal. Love what I’ve read so far in your blogs. I just learned to knit so I’m spending my scrap stash making swatches for educational purposes. I posthumously proved to my grandmother 2 years ago that I in fact, COULD, and subsequently DID, learn to crochet. I’m going further to prove to myself that I’m not inept.
I love your wit and humor…..
As for your sister – keep her laughing, it might evict Miss Molly, and make mom wet herself. She has a babyhood’s worth of auntie knits waiting to be worn and dirtied. And if she still won’t extricate herself, you have implements in your yarn basket to make her leave….sometimes kids respond to idle threats. Not usually, but sometimes. I’ll appreciate you to allow me to keep just ONE of my delusions thank you.
