I used to have a front loader washer.
There was some tumbling of clothes that would happen as the washer sped up and slowed down. So, I would imagine the felting happened during this time as items got jostled around.
I use the spin cycle all the time to remove excess water from my knit sweaters and hats. (I’ve knit a lot of both.) Both the machines I’ve used are top loaders. The first was an older model and I only needed to spin for about 30seconds. The one I have now is an energy and water efficient model. It takes some time to rev up the spin speed so I can leave knit items in for about 4-5minutes. This latter machine can be set so no water is added to the spin.
No problem with felting for all kinds of yarn mainly wool, some superwash, a few acrylics.
I have a front loader. It does not spray the clothes but as mentioned previously the tumbling as it speeds up and slows down felted a sweater I had only worn once ?. Lesson learned.
I think babbles are a current knitting fad that will not last and will cause knitwear with babbles to look dated in a few years. Maybe I am biased as I really don’t like the look of babbles. I don’t think there is anything “classic” about babbles.
