Hi Staci and Polly
I have done both those types of provisional cast on. But Barber cords are a GAME CHANGER for me on the provisional cast on, because picking up stitches from the spare yarn was still tricky
Attach Barber cord to needle tip and fold cord over 180 degrees to lie together with needle. Backwards loop cast on required stitches over needle plus cord. Slip cord off needle tip and work the first row. When finished slip cord onto needle tip and slip all those live stitches onto the needle and proceed
Hope you will try this and see if it works for you too. I think different cast on might give better live stitches but this is just So Easy!
