Learn to Knit!

(Hello, Knitters!) I made this post so you can share with your non-knitting friends, to help turn your normal friends into knitting friends.)

Sitting at home? Want to learn something new and fun and turn tv time into productive time? Here is how to get started, the investment is less than $16!

1. Yarn and needles. Pick three skeins of this yarn, one skein in one color (for practicing), and two skeins in another color (for your first scarf project).
Then get a pair of these needles, size US 10.5, 10″ long.

2. Learn the basics. These videos will walk you through it. First you want to learn the slip knot, then casting-on. Then you can practice the knit stitch for a few rows, then the purl stitch. To close up the loops and finish, we bind-off.

3. Start your first project. When you’re feel like you can work the basics, you can move on to knitting a scarf. This scarf pattern is a free download and includes a video tutorial.

After you’ve worked your first project, you’re ready to knit another scarf, or maybe move on to a hat…then socks, sweaters – so much to explore!

Weaving Ends in Reverse Stockinette

In this video I demonstrate how to weave in the end on what is usually the front side of the the knitting…in reverse stockinette, the purl-side of the work is actually the “right” side.

You can see my other videos on weaving in ends here.

The yarn I use for demonstration is Paintbox Aran Chunky.

Slow Motion Correcting Color-Change Jog

In this video, I demonstrate how to correct the “stair-steppy” jog you get when knitting stripes in the round, demonstrated in slow-motion. For one-round stripes, see the link below for Helix Knitting.

The other videos in my slo-mo series can be found here.

The yarn I use for demonstration is Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Chunky.
The needles I use are from interchangeable sets:
Knitter’s Pride Ginger 16″
Knitter’s Pride Zing 16″

If you are working one round stripes, the technique is different. For clean one-round stripes, you want to use the Helix Knitting technique.

The hat I use for demonstration is just something I made up for the video. Here are the quick instructions to make this baby hat, because I know someone will ask. 🙂
Fits 0-8 mo
Bulky yarn, size US 10 (6mm) needles.
CO 60, work 5 rounds 2×2
change color and knit 4 rounds
alternate color every 4 rounds until hat measures 5″ from cast-on edge (that was the ribbing plus 4 rounds of stripes or 16 rounds, for me). On the last round of this section, place a marker every 12 stitches.
Decreasing
Round 1: *k2tog, k to 2 stitches before marker, ssk, sm* repeat between markers to end of round.
Round 2: knit
Repeat these two rounds until 10 stitches remain, k2tog around, knit 1 round. Cut yarn and string through the remaining 5 stitches.

Slow Motion Magic Knot

In this video, I demonstrate an option for joining a new ball of yarn, magic knot, in slow-motion.

The other videos in my slo-mo series can be found here.

The yarn I use for demonstration is Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Chunky.

Socks on Flexible Double-Points (aka FlexiFlips)

Additional Materials: tapestry needle for weaving ends, three ring stitch markers, clippie marker
Gauge: 8.5 stitches per inch, or fewer stitch per inch if you’d like a slightly wider sock
