Beau Felted Wrap

beau

This project was a couple of exciting “firsts” for me – it is knit with YAK DOWN, and it’s a felted wrap. Yak down is an amazing fiber…it is as soft as cashmere, warmer than wool, and more breathable than wool. And a bonus, this project is available in a kit! In the video (below), I cover the techniques used in the pattern – chart reading, spit splicing, and felting.

Bijou Basin Ranch is a Himalayan Yak Ranch in Colorado, and the yarn they produce is under the label Bijou Spun. They also make a soap for exotic fiber called Allure. Be sure to visit their website to see all of the different fibers and products they offer.

Repairing Your Knits – Darning

Darning is a strong, reinforced repair for a hole or threadbare area. In this video, I demonstrate a couple of the ways you can use darning to fix a hole in any knitted piece.

The yarn I used for demonstration is leftover worsted-weight scraps, mostly Cascade 220.

My silver ring is actually a knitting needle gauge, and can be found here.

Felted Christmas Stocking

felted-xmas-stocking-sm

Size: After felting, about 16” long from cuff to toe, about 8” wide at cuff
Needles: Size US 10.5 (6.5 mm) 24” circular needle, size US 10.5 (6.5 mm) double-pointed needles
Yarn: 100% NON-superwash bulky wool (see note below on yarn choices and amounts)
Additional Materials: tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: 3.5 stitches per inch before felting

Note on Yarn: For the stocking to felt properly, you must use 100% non-superwash wool. I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky in these colors: Wine, Lumberjack, and Silver.
STRIPED STOCKING, THREE COLORS: 65 grams each of the two striping colors, and 45 grams of the accent color (used on the cuff/toe/heel). I bought one hank of each of the three colors, with plenty left over.
SOLID STOCKING, TWO COLORS: 130 grams of the main color, and 45 grams of the accent color (used on the cuff/toe/heel). For a two color stocking, you will need two hanks of the main color, and one hank of the accent color.
